Nuts to hold aircleaner cover

Bob, I take it you have the original knurled nuts designed to be turned by hand? My car has nylock nuts on there. I would try wrapping a rag around the nut then using pliers, to protect the nut and the airbox. If that slips, use one of those rubber pads from the kitchen designed to help open a stuck jar.

Can't help with getting them off, but I had noticed on my ex-set that the quality of the tapped hole was not the greatest, and it really wasn't tapped deep enough (i.e., they used a regular tapered tap rather than a bottoming tap so it "wedged" together as the stud went deeper into the blind threaded hole). Can't recall the size (M5 x 0.8P or M6 x 1P?), but once you have them off try running a bottoming tap (or just grind some of the end off of a regular tap to make a bottoming tap) to clean up the threads (you might even need to drill the pilot hole a little deeper -- but don't break thru!)

 

As a side note - if anybody knows where I can get *1* knurled nut, I'd be forever gracious. I have 3 of the 4...

When I called Norwood in TX, the guy I spoke with seemed to think what I have on my car (described over the phone) wasn't OEM. However, what I have looks nearly identical to the picture on your site. The one difference is that mine are black while yours are nickel...

What are your thoughts?

 

Bob -- That air cleaner nut matches exactly what was on my ex-'78 308 (but I don't know if all 308 are the same -- perhaps some of the early ones used a nut with a thru hole rather than a nut with a blind hole). The part number that you need is 113569. Don't know if they actually have them or can get them, but both www.allferrariparts.com and www.ferraripartsexchange.com show them as available at a reasonable cost (which is a good sign that you don't need Verell ).

If you can get them for $5~15 each, I'd sure recommend that you get a set of 4 so that they match well -- JMO, since they are such a visible engine part.

That sounds exactly like what the gentleman at Norwood described. Mine are like the ones that Ricambi sells.

Daniel - do you happen to know the "specs" of the nut? I.e., it's metric, so it should be something like M3, M5, M10, etc... I'd like to have a set of "original" ones, but also just pick up some wingnuts at the local hardware store for 'round town driving.

 

I haven't posted my "found my car" thread yet. But I did find it. It's a '78 and I think fairly original -- 3 owners. Just took a look and mine are black, too. And, I noticed I'm missing one. If you go all chrome, I'll take your black ones .

My early '78 has nuts that have a through hole. Not sure if they are correct or not. I also have a whole set (plus a couple extras) of the type pictured above but they won't work on my car as the studs are too long. It seems that they switched at some point to the closed top ones.

If anyone needs any of the closed top type (like the ones pictured in the posts above) drop me a PM with your adress and how many you need. I tried giving them away about a year ago and nobody seemed to want them. I have six.

EDIT: By the way I use the rag and pliers trick to get mine on and off. As long as you are careful it works well.
