And a letter from Ferrari of North America stating there are no outstanding recalls against the car and if there have been recalls proof that the car has been fixed by an authorized repair shop.

Clearing customs is actually fairly easy and well explained at www.riv.ca

What I'm concerned about is that I've been told for ALL Ferrari's from the USA need modified bumpers... that run as high as $20,000 by the time it's done. The car also needs trivial things like daytime running lights and a child seat anchor.

Its good to see you guys looking out for others..
The Ferrari has been cleared already by my broker and I have all the paperwork in hand. My broker has sent the title and paper work to customs in advance and you just have to give them a time when you are coming through. I also have a letter from Ferrari of Boardwalk Texas indicating no recalls and the bumpers are good on this model for all of north America. Just need a relay for the daytime running lights. I have done this many times and all you have to do is stop at the Canadian customs, present
your documents to them and pay the air tax and riv registration fee then you are good to go. My broker submits the GST and the 6.1% dutie for me as well.
If you are more patient Mackie transport will do all this for you for a fee.
I am a dealer, however this car will be for me. Here is the car.

As a separate issue from many of the "importing a car from the states" threads, I have an acquaintence asking me for some information on buying new cars from dealerships in the states.

I'm not sure what the rules are between all manufacturers, but is there a time limit on how old a car is before it can be bought in the states and then imported here? Would warranty be voided on a new car from a dealer in canada?

I would think they would protect themselves from cross border shopping/flipping.

Any info you guys have would be great.....i'm talking in general any car manufacturer.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I was told years ago it was 6 months before you can import, again that was years ago, I would like to know as well.

    The vehicle I was trying to get from the states was an 05 and the dealership said it was no problem, this was a couple of months ago through Dodge, i dont know what other makers do. As for the warranty this is the reply they sent me, even though the dealership told me otherwise;

"While we appreciate your interest, we must respectfully advise that
DaimlerChrysler Canada does not provide warranty coverage for vehicles
exported from the U.S. and registered in Canada. Once your vehicle is
registered in Canada, the balance of the U.S. manufacturers warranty
    would become void".

For the warranty call the manufacturer and make sure from them about the warranty, but any american cars are probably voided.

My uncle came back from Vegas this weekend with an 05 Dodge Magnum. He bought it from Towbin Dodge Jeep (think King of Cars) and they let him bring it over..he got a pretty good deal on it too I think.

As a sidenote to the warranty issue...when I imported my Viper, I transferred the extended care warranty under my name. Now...whether or not a Canadian dealer will honour it, or if I have to take the car down to a NY dealer remains to be seen.

I have brought up several new $xxx, xxx cars from the US to Canada, some as late as last month.

You'll need as cooperative dealer to start with.....and a manufacturer who isn't on the warpath against "automotive arbitrage".

Expect to lose the warranty coverage in some cases and depending on the manufacturer obviously......

There is no legitimate nor enforceable NO TIME LIMIT on import/export.....manufacturer's may or may not have internal rules that they want dealerships and customers themselves to follow.....as well as......some manufacturer's now have "anti-export clauses" on new car bills of sale that all purchasers must sign. And I have seen MB (for example) take customer's to court over these clauses and win.....and if a dealer is caught knowingly doing it, they get financially sanctioned as well.

It can be done....but each car is a case by case basis.

Brother, you guys know best but something tells me that's not a good move. You will avoid duties and GST now but that car will never be available for resale. It is not properly registered. It will bite someone in the arse down the road.

Better look into that. Again, it's just my two cents I don't have much experience in that area. Let us know what you find out.

I believe you have to plate it within 30 days, and pay PST when you do it. See http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/rgoutcan.htm

Certainly my older import was that way. I also had to pay 6.1% duty on it since it was German & GST at the border.

I would not suggest driving it across & not declaring it. The Feds will get you one way or another.

it has NOTHING to do with autoforum, i'm helping one of my buddies mom's do it, her fathers worth $400 million and doing all this to save $8,000, yes plating it as a florida car, then "gifting" it to his daughter, the guy at the R.I.V said he's not clear whether or not they'll have to pay P.S.T or not, i'm waiting for customs to call me back.i'm just helping me out so they sell me their lexus for CHEAP$$$:):):):)

I know what you mean. Even if it is NOT through Autoforum it may come back to haunt them. Like Ian said "The Feds will get you one way or another.
    ".

But At $400 Million they probably won't care. ;)

Anyways, dude you selling? Its been a funny month.

of course buddy i can sell ice to an eskimo J/K...but it went allright, sold a 91 testarossa, 1996 c4s, 94 NSX, 2001 740iL,and a 92 porsche turbo, so it's going ,could be better though, we're going through some great changes around here that will benefit our team and customers, so by next summer everyone will be experiencing a totally different atmosphere and purchasing experience. but i agree with the import thing, it could come back and bite them in the ass, but my buddy has severe O.C.D and will not let the smallest detail slip through the crack otherwise you are absolutely right.

AND IT IS RETROACTIVE ON CARS ALREADY HERE.......

I just got off the phone with my dealer and had the following rumor verified.....it'll be in writing in a day or two.

Effective JULY 1st any and all Porsche products imported to Canada will NO LONGER have ANY WARRANTY coverage whatsoever in Canada.

If an owner wants to pay for repairs themselves they are welcome to do so and "ATTEMPT" to get reimbursement from their selling dealer in the USA...........and said selling dealer is under NO OBLIGATION whatsoever to proceed with nor provide any reimbursement in any way shape or form.

Furthermore, US dealers will not be permitted to sell to Canadian clients and anyone trying after the fact to import a US car to Canada will now be required to also obtain a "COMPLIANCE LETTER" from PCNA.....to be issued at "their" discretion and "your" expense if they even bother replying to you.

And if anyone here has tried to deal with FNA or Lamborghini USA in that regard, you'll no what I mean..........

I guess that answers the question as to what Porsche was going to do about the FOREX problem.

Only question is............will the requirement for a PCNA compliance letter be for cars that are under warranty only.......or for everything within the 15 year age window ?

Its an international warranty....should be interesting to see them try.

If true will most certainly be challenged

Would be hard to retroactively remove cars from the RIV...

  24. Kds

    Kds F1 World Champ

    Scott......

    Actually it isn't.

The warranty can be worded as follows......"This warranty is granted by (insert name of relevant domiciled corporate subsidiary)" and you're toast..........it happens all the time with domestic stuff and Ferrari's. I've worked for dealers since 1989 and seen it before. In fact I posted it somewhere with a couple of phrases from current Porsche warranty books.

But that is not going to be the big issue..........the compliance letter will be what gets you in the end me thinks.
