Where to rent a house...

    As you might have read in my previous post, or not, we wanted to tour the US. As the plan seems to be a tad complicated to set up so "quickly" (on top of that we'd like to take our mothers with us and this impossible this year), we're looking for that...

    A great house to rent for 2-3 weeks.
    It should be luxurious, have 2-3 Br (or more they'd be unused), and be in a cool place from where we could move and visit stuff (like california or so) and be in the sun...

    Any ideas of a town/place to look for that ?

    Oh man, where do you want to stay? That site has everything covered, but it is really up to you what you want to do. What did you have in mind? Do you want to be near an amusement park, near the ocean, middle of Kansas, what type of weather, etc.?

    Initially i was thinking about so-cal. like palm springs or so.

    Don't know yet...hence my question.

    Honestly, with all due respect it's a very big country, and CA is a big state. You really need to figure out what YOU want to see and do...

    As an example, your question could be asked from an american perspective as:

    I'm coming to europe, where should I stay?

    Again, no disrespect intended, but it's impossible to answer your question in a meaningful way...


    Edit: also, what time of year?

    Do a little more research before sticking with one place. Palm Springs is nice, but I don't know what you would do there for 2-3 weeks unless you loved golf. If you are looking for some place that hot I may suggest Scottsdale, Az which has the same type of heat and lifestyle, but more stuff to do, places to see, etc. You could also take a day trip to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Great restaurants, etc.

    I could tell you where to go in europe :) depending on if you want sun or this or that.
    We planned to travel in July.
    The thing is, i have no real clue on what to see, ideally, i'd love to stay somehow close to LAX/LV/SFO etc. that's why i was thinking of palm springs.
    (I don't really fear heat as i spend quite some time in Egypt in the summer)

    Newport, RI is beautiful, and day trips to boston and NYC (2-3 hours by car)
    could drive to Niagara falls for weekend (prob 8 hours). Vermont mountains are close and beautiful. DC not too far for a weekend either (about 6 hours). Even Maine weekend possible...

    Again, the point is, do a bit of research, figure out the city or region, and answers may be much more helpful...

    Edit: Was typing this during your reply above. Seems your pretty set on So Cal... not my strong suit....

    Alright, I lived in So. Cal for 18 years... My thoughts on Palm Springs is that there isn't too much to do. You'd get bored after 2-3 weeks unless you are just looking to hang out by a pool.

    Are you into golf? What do you plan on doing while on the vacation. What about staying around Venice Beach and Hollywood area? You could go to Disneyland, head out to Vegas for a weekend, head to Palm Springs and play some golf, anotehr weekend in San Francisco, Venice Beach, Sunset Dr., Rodeo, etc. The traffic may piss you off quickly though.

    Sounds cool, but i had troubles finding houses to rent in that area with swimming pools.

    Maybe i'm too dumb ???

    Go to homeaway and search the region you want, on the top right click refine search and you can check find places that have pools. Then click search again on that page.

    Yeah, i tried it, but nothing came up.

    Anyway, i'll do some homework and let you know.

    If anybody else has a funny idea on where to go/what to do....feel free....

    I'd look for something to rent in Carmel Valley. You can probably do some extended 2-3 day trips up to Napa or down south to the LA area more easily from there.

    That would be my vote, not sure if it completely fits in with your plans though.

    Do you mean in Carmel Valley? Yes I think so, it tends to have a lot of tourists and groups who stay for events like the Concours and golf tournaments. Carmel Valley (which is a town) will have the most sun but Pebble Beach is probably the nicest place but there is also Carmel itself. The closer you are to the ocean in Northern CA, the more likely it will be cloudy. The summer can be different but its better to be inland a bit.

    I know there are places to rent down there, but I'm not sure how to find them, in the past I've just stayed with relatives. I would try to find some people you know (or people on this board) who've been to the Pebble Beach concours a few times and have rented a house in that area.

    If you're going to spend your whole trip in So.CA, you might as well just go to Cancun. Or Nice.

    Places you might want to visit if you want to "see America": Independence Hall (Phila PA), Boston Harbor (and Old Ironsides), a few of the sights in D.C. (National Archives, Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, etc.), ...

    ... oh, and remember the Alamo. ;)

    The logistics of a tour are a pain, so if you want to veg out somewhere for the whole trip, I can sympathize. (But European cities have enough history that you can spend a week on one city alone. You can see all the history of West Coast US cities in about ten minutes.)

    If you're going to visit relatives, then that will determine where you stay.

    If you're just looking for climate, it's a big planet.
