Yes, he was talented, no question about that, but he seems to be one of those really good drivers mired in an untrustworthy car, for whatever reason, just like a lot of folks. If nothing had ever broke on Eddie Cheever's Renault, he may very well have been a WDC...

Kinda like Dolphins QB Dan Marino - all the passing records, but no ring, so he isn't even considered as one of the best QB's of all time., but Brett Favhre won ONE Super Bowl, and he is. (and yes, I like Brett AND Dan).

Foitek was the son of the biggest Ferrari importer in Switzerland and money bought his ride. He had talent, but not enough for F1.

You have a point about Winkelhock. Stuck was nowhere in F1 and the (German) media tried to explain it away with his tall figure.

Ickx was ok in the Ferrari. Bell wasn't. I don't think it is a thing of a driver being good in one class and not so good in another. I simply think F1 is the top of the world and as difficult as it can get. If you don't cut it there, you still might be good enough for a lower class as is endurance racing etc. Even though MS wasn't the hottest in Group C, I'm sure if he'd join now, he'd be really fast there now too.

You may have a point, but I have seen a few F1 drivers take a 'step down' and not do so hot, so I guess the question is what kind of an F1 driver were they when they were in F1 ?

MOST of the F1 drivers that went down ('down' sounds bad, but if F1 is the pinnacle, you have nowhere to go but 'down', correct ?), just about every decent F1 driver that has gone 'down' (for sake of argument, let's define 'decent' as a person that has had a few podium finishes) has done well in the lower classes, be it Gruppe C or Indy cars. But a lot of the 'lesser' drivers - those that never found a top 6, let alone a podium, went down, and still didn't do so hot.

I always wondered what Martin Brundle or PierLuigi Martini would have done in a fast car....

All agreed: Being a F1 driver doesn't mean you're at the top of every other racing class. You have to be a decent F1 driver. If you are a F1 star, chances are darn good you'll be great in other classes as well (except rally, which I think is as difficult as F1).

Average folks like Herbert, Alesi and Frentzen went on to great things in Group C and Le Mans.
