In the last few days when starting my 79 308 I would hear a loud squeel that would happen a few times and then go away. It sounds like the noise that I use to remember hearing as a kid and people would say it was a belt It might happen 4 or 5 times and then be gone. It happens when you rev the engine. Sounds to be from area behind passenger. Any ideas.

Um............belt noise. Check the belt tension(loose). Maybe they are perished(have gone hard) :)

It wouldn't be one of your toothed cam belts... it would be the air conditioning or water pump belt (which are on the passenger side).

Maybe a sign of whats to come. It could be the waterpump starting to go where after sitting it doesn't want to turn freely and causes the belt to slip and thus the squeel. Or it could be a loose AC belt but I would suspect that would squeel when you turn on the AC and not when you start the car. Now I am ASSUMING that the smog stuff is removed so there are no belts to contend with but if you still have this set up it may be a loose belt or an air pump ready to go. And last it could be a loose WP belt . I would take the WP belt off and check if the WP pulley turns freely. Also check the belt for wear and hardness. If bad replace. My 2 C

Probably the water pump/alternator belt. The alternator has a high load just after starting the car since it is trying to re-charge the battery after the load from the starter. Once the battery has been charged, less alternator load, and the squeal disappears. The belt could just be loose or there could be worse problems. Belts aren't that expensive compared to the labor time. Since it's already been slipping, I would replace it.

In any case, don't let this go, you'll end up with a broken belt and be stuck on the side of the road waiting for the flatbed truck.

    Regards, Kerry

I agree with the a/c / water pump belt. It's common on the carb 308's.

    JUst replace them.

Another common problem with the squeel is a snapping sound that goes away on warm up as well.

The snapping sound is most likely static discharge off the timing belts. Ferrari just wanted to be sure to have enough sources of ignition present when the carbs flooded over and spilled fuel all over the hot engine. Snap snap woooff!
