Yeah it's not really that funny. Last I checked everyone had free choice in what music they listen to or what particular cultures they followed. Rap isn't doing anything, it's this generations insistance on following it, buying it and/or living it. You've got country music, rock, punk or the old punk movement all with dress styles and habits of their own. Why aren't these taking off and if so what would you find to complain about then? I'm sure a lot less as long as what you like to percieve as "black" culture wasn't involved in it. Sour grapes is what I'm reading here.

Driving around So Cal I'm as likely to see white kids in San B Valley leaned back in their seats without a hip hop beat to be heard as I am a 5'2 Armenian woman in a new white BMW 760. Younger generations of PEOPLE will always seek out ways to differentiate themselves from their elders. Maybe you ought to ask your parents what they thought when some of you were apparently running around in rolled up peglegged jeans listening to Boy George with a lot stiff goup in your hair. I'm quite certain that for some of you, your dads were mighty relieved you outgrew that phase and found a woman. Some of you.

As for the other genres of music, I do not see them even close to the disgusting crap that rap puts out.

 

Rap is big corporate music now, 99% of which is garbage. When art mixes with quarterly P&L statements, this is what you get: music for a fast-food generation with a short attention span who demand little and settle for less. Sound and shock for the Ritalin-induced A.D.D. demographic.

The whole system is rigged, from the A&R execs told to "make the projections next quarter", to the distributors and monopolized radio stations who are (to put it bluntly) paid to "spin" this crap and get it into your heads. Then there are the movie, television and product tie-ins which are surgically timed for maximum effect. Punk doesn't make any money and MBAs in Brioni suits don't know how to market it, so that's why it doesn't "take off". Rap music died around 1993 anyway. R.I.P.

The "black" comment is a crock. R&B artists, most of whom are black, still make great, classy music. My iPod is crammed with music from Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Miles Davis, Ike & Tina Turner, Willie Hutch, Eddie Kendricks, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, the list goes on and on. Now THAT was talent. These "stars" today don't even deserve to shine those other artists' shoes.

I agree with you on that last statement. Hell, Michael Jackson's music is still good (well his earlier stuff), depsite his actions today. Problem with rap is that it's cheap lyrics that have no meaning, and the lyrics are pretty gross and sick.

 

First off, why bother if it doesn't appeal to you? Why knock something you don't understand? It would seem to me the only one to condemn anything properly is one who is immersed in it. If you don't understand it, let it go. Anything else just fuels hatred...and we all know how that goes....(or we should by now).

What is really worrying is that years from now, the Hip Hop generation will be on their platforms condemning whatever pop culture is prevalent at the time. Never declare someone else stupid lest we are forced to look at you.....

 

Rewind it back about 15-16 years. The lyrics have gotten no sicker than they were in the late 80's/early 90's when NWA, Public Enemy and others were releasing music. At the time, though, that stuff was groundbreaking. No one had heard anything like that before, and it was pretty bold IMO. Record companies didn't know what to do with it. The authorities didn't know what to make of it.

The grit started wearing off around 92 or 93. By 96 it was pretty much all corporate, copy-cat, "me too" music. If you were born after - say - 1986, you missed a revolution in music. It's such a pre-packaged, image-driven style now and so big company cheezeball (i.e., clothing lines, Pimp Juice, etc.) I guess we must wait for the next thing to come along and get ruined. The style has gone as far as it can IMO, and all there is left is this constant regurgitation of what worked in the past. Shame.

One of the only things still surviving from those days is the turntablism. A lot of the things Jazzy Jeff, GMF and Terminator X were doing are still being done by kids today, some of it quite ground breaking.

Each his own. I love the early solo work by Dre, Snoop, and Tupac. After that, only the early DMX cds struck my interest. Great music...IMHO of course.

 

Agree with you here. I guess the lyrics haven't gotten sick, but the music got more "corporate" as you said, and became mainstream.

 

The "gangster lean" thing has been around for years, it's just something younger people do when they are young but will grow out of it. Did you not do anything immature when you were young?

 

The "lean" method has always been around before rap made it the thing to do. Like Remix said "Rap" music is mostly coporate now. I can't even take offense to those who blame rap music in many of today's actions because it's true and the sad part is how the system targets a certian demographic to sell it to. But what can ya do

 

"How It's Going Down" with DMX and Faith Evans is a great GREAT song. Excellent, one of my favorites. I don't care much for his other stuff, but the production and arrangement on that song is brilliant. I can listen to that song over and over and never get sick of it. That's rare.

"The Chronic" was significant in much the same way Nirvana's "Nevermind" was. I really feel after that, it was all downhill with a few exceptions.

I like rap-I also go to a respectable college getting a respectable degree with a respectable GPA.

 

It has to do with the cross section of Americans I see riding around like this. I listen to all genres of music and my question is why aren't these other forms of music reaching the popular levels that rap apparently is? No one is putting a gun to anyones head to buy this stuff. I certainly don't. Look in my CD cases or IPOD and you will find at most three albums from Tribe Called Quest, an old LL Cool J album and an early Black Eye Peas. Stop intentionally missing my point.
