Hey Everyone! Well, the time is coming soon for me to get my license. For over 5 years now I have wanted to own a 1968 Mustang (preferably a Fastback). I am looking for a Mustang that needs a little work, but not a full restoration. No rust, color doesn't matter, interior has to be existent, and I would prefer a 302 engine. Transmission doesn't matter to me. This is hoping to be a summer project for my dad and I before I get my license in september.

So if you know anyone, or have seen any ads selling a '68 Mustang, PLEASE forward them to me :)

Thank you all for much in advance.

    Congratulations on your excellent taste!
The 68 is a good choice for a vintage Mustang. Old enough for classic styling, but it includes modern safety features like headrests, collapsing steering columns, dual brake mastercylinder.

Even in CA finding a rust free car will require some searching. A little rust in the corners of the doors is no big deal, just avoid rotted floor pans and especially the cowl area.
To properly fix a rusted cowl requires drilling out over 100 spot welds.
To check for cowl rust, pour water thru the vent grill in front of the windshield, if the water pours out on the carpet inside, RUN AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy the hunt and the fixing up.

The first car I ever bought was a used 66 Mustang coupe. I had a lot of fun in that car and it still has a place in my garage. Its been there since 1978

i look for these cars everyday. I do the craigslist/recycler, occassionally they pop up. Just keep your eye open. For a fastback, if it is running and clean you will be looking atleast 15k.

I know of a 68 california special that is for sale......that is pretty rare, only 4001 made...

'69 started the collapsible steering column.

Dustin, show him some photo's of Rich's new toy!

    {it might make him smile}

the '68 car's have some safety improvements over '67's and earlier....but you still
need to worry about the driver. There's very little tire under the car for stopping & turning

Yeah, the fastbacks are DEFINITELY more expensive, but you get it back in higher resale. The California Special sounds great, got any more information? I love those.

Erich, thanks for the tips. I appreciate it.

    And don't worry Jim, I'm a good driver. I think :D

Thanks for the kind words. Just keep looking and you will find one. I looked at a lot of these mustangs and became very familiar with them before buying. Just be patient! If you have any questions just ask. Good Luck! -John

Very beautiful car, but I'm looking for something I can do a little work on. But I appreciate you trying to help me out! I called a guy about a 1968 Mustang (hardtop) selling for only $4,750 and it was in great condition (based off of photos), however it was already sold.

The right car will come one day...just hopefully soon :)

Within 20K range. However for a normal hardtop it should be much less than 20K. My dad only buys "deals" so thats basically what i'm looking for.

So please forward me anything you think is worth looking at. I appreciate it.

Good luck on your search as well!
