Sorry about the strange title, my wife is giving me stress about the volume (noise level) of my 355 exhaust. She says it is anti-social in the residential area we live. The problem is idle and slow driving conditions. I have a Tubi. My question is: can anybody on the board give an indication of the noise level of the Capristo compared to the standard factory muffler at idle/slow speed ? Is the noise/low frequency level of Capristo considerably louder than stock at these conditions ? The problem with the Tubi is the low frequency bass that resonates the windows of my neighborhood (honestly) at idle conditions. In all respects I LOVE the Tubi, but for the sake of my personal stress I need to find a solution where I can slip out of my neighborhood unnoticed, but still to get the "scream" in the tunnels. My other alternative is stock exhaust with test pipes. I searched the archives a lot, but did not find anything about low speed noise, plenty of WOT clips Any comments/experiences would be appreciated (but please, no marriage advice)... TIA.
Put a muffler on your wife? Just teasing. Tell her the only option will cost $250,000. If she agrees, go buy an F430.
It's a good idea, but not solving my problem, because even if I had a 430 I would never sell the 355!!
You don't need new exhaust...you need a new wife! The 355 with Tubi and test pipes is arguably the best sounding street Ferrari ever. If she/they don't like it at low RPM, scream in and out of the neighborhood at redline. Spang
Ear plus is vastly cheaper than a new wife (or exhaust). Home depot has ear plugs, the very foam soft squishy-type, they are the best and most comfortable.
new wife would be fewer headaches if you ask me I had a tubi on my 355 and like someone else here said, it's perhaps the best sounding Ferrari there is My friends used to drive behind me just to hear it go through our tunnel in town. I live in a condo complex and my ex-girlfriend used to say that when I started the ferrari up it vibrated the entire building Ray
I would go around and ask you neighbors and see if it has bothered them first. If it hasnt, then I would go and buy test pipe and really enjoy your 355, then repeat step one. If it has, thenI would go test pipes and stock muffler. Jim
I hate to say it, but I agree with your wife....a tubi on any model is too loud for the street. Honestly, to non-sport car people it isn't any different than a fart can on a honda or a car with the stereo that's way too loud its annoying when passing by and feakin annoying when it lives next door .and whats worse is that it doesnt do anything to improve performance, its just a noise maker .but thats JMO.
thanks for the comments. I've still got a set of test pipes but I went back to cats & Tubi. The Tubi & test pipes sounded absolutely mindblowing, but the volume was rediculous. I went back to cats when the I was black-flagged on a track test day at a racing circuit for being too loud ! Anyway, I'm interested to know about stock muffler and test pipes. Has anybody actually heard this set-up? Does it deliver quiet low speed, but good sound at higher revs/WOT? @jimi900:have you experienced this set-up?
Not really sure how it is done, but a friend of mine has a tubi type exhaust on his 911 c4s and porsche put an option switch in the car which changes the sound level back to normal at your request. Very cool option, which might be worth researching. Check with your local Porsche dealer how it is done.
..Sounds familiar. My neighbor came down the hill and told me he knew when I started the car because the windows in his house would vibrate. There's not a whole-lot you can do. Tell her the 355 is the quietest model made or something. What a nice problem to have
I had the same problem with my stock muffler. The sound was much louder then normal. Took the car to the dealer and found out both headers are cracked. $10,000 to fix. I hope you don't have the same problem.
I too have comments from my wife and neigbor about the Tubis on my 2000 Maranello at fast idle (1500 rpm). Just reverborates off the walls. Instead of buying them both ear plugs I am wondering if exhaust tailpipe plugs might work or any other trick like modifying the Tubi baffle plate. I once mailed TubiStyle about this but got no reply. I like the size, style and weight of the Tubi just hate the resonance at 2000rpm. I know Tubi know to fix it - they just aint telling us. Regards, Ron
I'm assuming that the bypass valve is discarded on the Tubis. Bill "FFCobra" found that his was wired open and his Capristo (sp?) exhaust became survivable at low rpms once the valve was allowed to operate.
I have to agree with the above comment. I replaced the Tubi on my 355 with a Capristo Level 1, which offers a bit of a reduction in the noise level as well as the low-frequency resonance. If anyone's looking for a good used Tubi, I have one.
Find the db level on the town ordinance on noise pollution for support. (Talk numbers, not impressions.) Does your wife also run outside in her robe to yell at the trash men for making too much noise? Of course, there's always the time-honored American approach to dealing with a loud muffler: Turn up the radio.
I had a Tubi and test pipes---too loud and the exhaust stunk like a 68 Camaro. Changed to Tubi and Hyperflows and the exhuast smell went away but car still too loud. Went to stock muffler and Hyperflow and much better. No boom, can drive the car for hours without a headache and still sounds great at full throttle and cruise. Louder than stock. How many people have a Tubi and test pipes and drive for more than 30 minutes at a time? I bet not many.
No suggestions on how to modify Tubi's from vintage 2000? Bit of DIY welding or plugs? Seems a shame to have to buy a Capristo when a simple mod to the Tubi could do the trick. Anybody seen or used CarChemistry's mufflers on a Ferrari? Regards, Ron PS My 550Tubis do not have any bypass valves.
Now that's the exact info I'm looking for. Next stop, a stock exhaust & test pipes. Gonna call my spanner man in the morning... I'm figuring that even if it costs me a few hundred €€€'s and I don't like it I can always go back to the Tubi. Thanks. EDIT: Meant to say that in my current setup with the Tubi, the bypass valve is fitted and verified as fully functioning by my tech.
I would use the hyperflow cats instead of test pipes. They flow almost the same and the toxic fumes won't asphixiate anyone! Birdman
A couple of cases of wine to give out to the neighbours....just to say sorry for any inconvenience. It's much cheaper than a new exhaust (or wife) and it's good PR. It works for me...since the only person in my area that complains about my exhaust noise....is my wife.
Ugh, heres an alternative, get divorced I have no cats & no mufflers on the Slutmobile & I'll be removing the muffler from my F40. if she doesnt like my car, she's welcome to take the Bus
