The front and rear both use the same lift sizes on the 348.

Are we talking about Trunk and Hood Pistons?

Don't suppose they have a teenie tiny one for the glove box of a 348?

The "lifts" youre referring to at Pep Boys, they are for the engine lid? Mine are getting weak with age. For $35 bucks id replace them.

Can someone post a pic on how to replace them, as my engine lid will not stay open on a 355.

If you show your car, you will get ding'ed for them not saying "Ferrari" on them.

lift support is another term for hood/trunk shock. There was no lift support tiny enough for the glove compartment but that to me would be a waste since the ferrari one I got from the dealership only lasted about 1 month - not worth it.

The replacement is easy. Just unscrew the nut holding each end of the piston to the lid / frame and replace it with the new one. The new one should have a ball joint and threaded stud in the package. You just wiggle the top until the new one slides in and then tighten down the nut to hold the new piston. The only word of caution is to be careful not to drop the nut when you remove it from the old piston assembly over the engine, it will drop into the engine cavern, never to be seen again. I would suggest doing the front ones first to understand how to install them, then do the rear ones.

Thanks for the great post. It could not have come at a better time. Mine blew out two weeks ago, and just never got around to paying the $90 plus shipping for new ones. Nevertheless, when I did replace them the old ones I took out of my 99 355 were of the same brand. I have had my car for three years and purchased from a dealer... do the original ones say Ferrari?

The pain was a) leaning over to get to the bolts, b) getting a socket on the bolt that is italian engineered near a line coming out of the firewall (hoe nice).

The fit was perfect, and tension was on the money! Took about 30 min of careful not to drop the nuts work...

Ohh and for the other person that posted on how?.... The new ones have a metal clip over the ball socket. Just pull it out with a small screw driver, and snap the old one in, then put the clip back on. You will see it, and it comes with direction on the back of the bag.

I unbolted nothing on my 355 to change both the front and rear supports. the mountsare ball shaped and the shock has a cup that fits them. If you look at the cup there is a small pin that clips around and through the cup. Pop the pin off and the shock comes off and goes back on with gentle pressure.

Great tip on the replacement shocks!

    Thanks,

    Ken

The Sach supports (SG404018) are the same as for a 2002 FORD FOCUS.

The 355 and 348 lift supports (they are the same) do not have "Ferrari" on them anywhere...just the Stabilus name silkscreened on them.

Good to know there is a less expensive "cross reference" on these struts. If anyone wants to get the EXACT replacments, here is my post on the subject from last year:

"You are correct....my further research finds that Sachs is the North American distributor for Stabilus struts. The Sachs part number for the 355/348 engine lid and front hood struts is SG437007. I purchased them from rockauto.com for $26.79 each...plus $4.01 each for shipping....saved about $10 each versus buying from my local dealer and paying sales tax. BTW, when ordering from Rockauto.com, they do not show a listing for the 355, just use the 348, since they use the same struts. I just installed mine...they are identical in every way to the oem factory Stabilus ones (except for having fresher date codes printed on them). My front hood stays up much better now. "

What is the kg/lbs rating on these SG404018? It would be nice if we could find a replacement that is maybe 4 or 5 lbs stronger than the factory oem ones.

They are strong. My hood used to open by itself after a drive when everything was good and hot. Lately I have had to lift it.

With the new struts from Pep Boys, it opens by itself when cold. In fact I’m worried they may be a bit too strong.

The oem Sachs struts are rated at "400N" is printed on the side of them. Can you read what it says on yours?

I thought the originals are rated at 350N? I am going from memory so I might be wrong.

Sorry it took so long...Mine (Pep Boys) are "465N", originals are "400N"

I was right, they are stronger. I am careful when opening the hood now.

    Thanks for the find Julian.

Just got through installing the new struts on my engine hood. I closed the hood, then went and pulled the latch. The hood flew up so fast it scared me, as I raced back to try and stop it, but slowed way down and stopped when the strut neared the top of it's travel, just before the hood reached it's end of travel!

The car was cold when I did this. The hood used to only stay up when the engine was hot.

I am begining to wonder if the ideal set up for the lighter engine lid, would be one new, oem strut, and one of these higher rated ones? That might be the best combination.

For the heavier front trunk lid, two of the higher rated ones would be just the ticket, I think.

The stock ones are plenty for the rear lid. When I release mine it pops up with no problem at all. The front will stay open, but it needs to be lifted with the stock lifts. I just replaced mine with factory Stabilus struts about two months ago.

Cannot comment on using the Pepboys strut in front since I have not done it. But the rear ones have been installed for over 2 weeks and there are no visible signs of the struts being too strong warping the lid.
