Why do Multimillionaires keep working?

  1. To see how far their luck will go

  2. To see how much they can make (curiosity)

  3. Because it's just never enough

  4. Because they have nothing better to do

  5. Because quitting might kill the company they've started

  6. Because they really enjoy what they do

  7. Because they're competing with someone

  8. Because they are afraid they don't have enough to retire on

OK, I have to ask. When a guy hits a net worth of say $10 Million, why do they keep working? Never mind those who go into the Billions! What motivates them? Why don't they just kick up and enjoy life?

Just curious, what have you heard?

    The real answer is two of the above;

Because they really enjoy what they do.

    &

Because they have nothing better to do.

Enjoyment and boardom if you quit.

I'd guess for some it's all a very serious game and the numbers are how they keep score...

For others, what hey do has become who they are. If they quit, who are they now?

And for others I'm sure it's that they love what they're doing so why quit now! (lucky b@stards!)

    Because 10M is not enough.
Anyway, I think it´s Because they really enjoy what they do. That´s what I hear from 10M+ owners.

Well let me put your mind at ease. When I hit 10mm I'll be retiring and living off of the interest.

    Good question......

I think some don't. I know a guy who sold his business and retired. He lives on a 92' boat and they motor up and down the east coast visiting friends.

Then I also know others that get into a different social class once they reach x millions and they want to go higher to say the 100mil level. Once they reach that they start talking about making the Forbes list, etc......

    For some it's never enough.....

One thing I will say is once you start donating to charities you will be hounded. They will suck the life blood out of you. I've seen some friends treated very poorly by some of the biggest charities. No matter how much they give it's not enough.

My dad still works every day...and I do mean every day. He enjoys what he does and he is very good at it. He always says, "It's not what you retire from, it's what you retire to." meaning that he would be bored as hell sitting at home...plus my mom would probably kill him :)

I retired in January 2000. Went on 6 trips, watched a ton of tv. I went totally nuts. I went in thinking I was never going to work again. By November, I was back in business. I didnt have 10 million though.

So now that you can "work as it suits you", how did you design your job into your "dream job"?

    Anyone?

Most people have made millions because they enjoy the job they do, take the Microsoft guys as an example, they got into it becuase they had a passion for the technology and what the could make it do........the Billions they've earnt was just a nice bonus.......having said that Paul Allan's retired and seems to spend most of his time playing with his planes, boats and other toys

I could lay back & do nothing but I feel a responsibility to help society so I am very active giving to charities that help the homeless, children, animals, and victims of natural disasters

I believe that wealthy people have a responsibility to give back to society but not in taxes

My next goal is to help educate the world about the need for space travel and why its so important at this stage in civilization. To that end I will be working with some of the most important people in that field as well as making donations to libraries and educating children on the importance of this to our future

I can retire in 5 years and will be 49 years of age and I am really looking forward to it. I also plan on going nuts and traveling, but I sure hope I don't get so bored that I'll be back to work.

Yes, I did that to a degree. While I have never retired, I did go to work for myself doing the work that was available to make a living. After making a few bucks and getting a little comfortable, I resigned from doing the jobs that pay okay but give me aggravation. Now life is good, and the work is not really work, but is something that is (for the most part) enjoyable.
This is the chief merit of being self-employed.

I recall reading in an article discussing this very question (although it had to do with very rich people, into the 100s of million dollars and above) that most of these people have "sadistic mental drives" that motivate them to just do more and more and more of what they do. That being the main reason why they never actually retire early, because they won't get that mental satisfaction from suceeding at their jobs/hard work. If you can make sense of what I just wrote, I think you'll fully understand.

todays news with warren buffet provides the most enlightened view yet.

he passed on the bulk of his wealth (in stages) to the b and m gates foundation in the form of bh stock grants which may fall or rise over time.

the wealth he continues to create reflects in the share price of bh and how much his donation is worth or will be worth.

so the harder he works (hes 75) creates more wealth for berkshire and his charity of choice.

he is an example of enlightened as are b and m gates.

I would not say dream job, but I would say I only do things that challenge me. The business I am currenty in, I opened on a dare. The people who have been in the industry for 30 years said I cannot do it the way I thought. I am in my second year and I have proved them wrong.

Plus, it is really not about the money for me. (it was in my 20's) Its the fun of making something out of nothing.
