Wow! The original fuel cell, too. "May 67" build date and the eyelet for the panel cover fastening molded into the bladder. Are those door latch mechanisms derived from Fiat? Great pics!

Great job so far! I love to see all of the hand made pieces which are painstakingly done by Italian artisans. Fantastic, keep up the good work.

    Jim,

Neat pictures! Did you end up stripping the paint off of the original coupe tail or did you make a new one?

    Regards,

What are you plans for the fuel tank when the car goes back together? Are you planning on building a modern system that appears original such as you have done with 002C? That was interesting to follow. I look forward to seeing more.

    Hi

That is her original coupe tail. After much soul searching we decided that it would not be possible to save the tail from galvanic corrosion unless we removed the original paint which was in horrible shape as well. We will save a small patch for old times sake but preserving her original body seemed the right thing to do and the corrosion where the aluminum was wrapped around the steel edges was starting to spread and had corrupted the paint. We've gotten pretty good at painting as they did in the day and will paint her as they would have done.

As for the original bladder I suspect to make her safe and drivable we'll do something about that as well but we'll have her tested before we decide.

The bladder oddly seems to be in very good shape and the original bladder in J6 albeit much more high tech is still fine.

Its amazing how the classic Ferraris were made from scratch by hand with no special tooling, just simple jigs, hand tools and alot of skill.

Jim, forgive me if this has been covered, but will 0854 retain the blue accent? Did it have the blue when it was originally in coupe configuration? (looking at the layers of paint it seems not)

Yes the blue is original. It's under everything else including Piper green, a red and blue over painting of the original red and blue and 30 lbs of bondo that was added over the years...

This is how she look again.

What race/track is that picture from? The blue signifies Maranello Concessionaires, right?

What about these two decals? I am going to guess the P is for Prototype class?

Yes the Blue was the Maranello Concessionaires color. The P is for prototype.

The "Speedbird" was for BOAC who sponsored the race at Brands Hatch.

Note that in the middle of the race they broke out the side windows because of cockpit fumes.

The shot with #23 is 0854 at Le Mans. (Different # but same blue accents with which the car always ran until Piper painted her Green)

    legends live...

so whats the scope of work for 854?

looks like the panels are being refreshed/replaced due to oxidation. is the rest of the car undergoing work as well?

at some time you know you have to do a full review of driving impressions of 002 vs. 0854 vs. 2006 P4/5 and commit that to some sort of public record. it would be welcome.

    all out.
