Completely random question for you all...

Has anyone ever had any luck trying to put a car purchase on their credit card to get frequent flier miles? I have a car purchase coming up and thought this would be a great way to get miles quickly. Last time I tried this, however, I was informed that I was only allowed to charge up to $3,000 on my card (Mercedes-Benz Manhattan). I understand that credit card companies take a percentage of the sale, which is why dealerships would probably not want this. Has anyone ever done this?

The Porsche dealer allowed me to put $5,000 on my Amex card when I purchased my last 911. My MB dealer would only allow me to place $3,000 on my AMEX.

They don't want to eat the 3% or so that the credit card company charges.

Yeah, its really not possible unless you have an account with the dealership.

Yep - can't be done. The dealership still has to pay the juice on the card. I have managed to do 5K but that's about it.

The only exception is if you have an Amex black card (which don't grow on trees) because those cards are essentally cash for accounting purposes and are not prebilled a set amount.
