Have to agree with Big Al. Hendrix changed guitar playing forever. Also have to give a nod to Clapton, BB King, etc.

I remember watching a biography about Hendrix. When he first went to Europe he played at some club. Clapton was there, and left in the middle of it. Some said out of jelousy/anger/suprise/embarassment.

Who knows, either way they painted it like Clapton was a little intimidated by Hendrix.

With all due respect to Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan was technically better. Maybe not more creative, but a better guitar player.

David Gilmour deserves a mention. As do Gary Rossington and Alan Collins. I could go on forever. Nothing I like better than a well-played guitar.

Seriously, as much as I respect what Hendrix did for the art, SRV took it and did it better. I have, for example, several versions of "Voodoo Chile" by both. Hendrix invented it, and deserves full credit for that, but SRV played it better. Same for "Little Wing." Just to name two. No, SRV was not the creative genuis that Hendrix was, but purely from a technical point of view, he was a better guitar player. Not a better artist, just a better guitarist.

No one plays like Hendrix did. I sometimes listen to his records and wonder what he'd be doing right now, at 64 yrs. old with a guitar, and the other amazing stuff he would have done, if he just hadn't gone and died. I was 15 and remember it vividly.

Damn, he was unbelievable. Then, and now. Listen to his stuff. No one does what he did.

Well, as Mrs Dubai would say (being English) you can't say fairer than that.

FWIW both are better live than in the studio, and for me THAT is the mark of a virtuoso.

    :)

I was only a buck sergeant in the Army, so hey what do I know?

As my uncle the Marine chaplain always says "Semper Gumby!" (always flexible!)

I was once lucky enough to see BB King and SRV jam on AFN in Germany. All I can say is:

    !!!!!!!!!!!!

These are my favorite posts. What defines best.. Is it there technical ability to play, Most of the guitars posted are "imitated" by kids learning to play. I was a better "technical" player than Hendrix 15 years ago. My brother can imitate Eddies style all day long. So what makes someone the best.. Influence, with that said
    Hendrix, Clapton and Ace Frehley
