Hmmm, didn't consider the insurance part.......Thanks! Still, I'd go air shipment as well, you have seen that container ship that collided with something, and the ones on the back are jumbled and missing a few rows????? Still, Napolis' approach has great merit, I was looking at that '79 308GTS For Sale in Hawaii and just use it when you are there! I need a GTB for the surfboard rack though, I'd think...
I think I probably posted that image of the box boat after the collision. Shipping by sea is statistically very safe, just I am involved in the unsafe end. I shipped my Mondial Cabriolet from California to Singapore for about $2k one way (the stuff at each end was the most expensive, the sea freight was cheap).
Last week I dealt with a bang and a bump (separately) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Oh, and it was a container ship that bumped the tanker in the last picture. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Matt: Do you own a 512BB? Did you ever own one? What was the chassis #? If you did own one, and you only paid $10k (even if it cost $38k to put it together) that wa the deal of the century. I paid much more than the $48k you say you had all in your BB for a barn find 365BB with the engine out and apart (#18265). A
I remember that drama. I thought the guy moved to Texas and bought a Mazda after selling his beater 308? I recall someting about not showing up at a restaurant to meet Rob and a a few others with his serial # to prove this alleged ownership of the phantom 512bb? I thought the whole thing would have been embarrassing enough for the guy to move on on a permanent basis. Now he is back in CA and never left F-chat? Interesting say the least. Thanks for that tidbit of info. It all makes sense now. Is the guy an airline pilot? His profile gives one that inference.
I received an email also from Ferrari with a link to the survey. It, too, lead to a page that said I had already completed the survey. I suspect it to be a an error in the code. Sometimes these online surveys are problematic. I believe Ferrari's attempt at offering in house restoration to be authentic as I recieved in the mail a brochure from them advertising this service several months ago. It was a nice gesture on their part but for my gt4? Nah. If I had any of the cars in my "wanted" list I'd consider it.
I am not a airline pilot. I never said I was. "on a plane somewhere" is a referrence to my job where I do a lot of traveling. My old ferrari was traded in after spending $4k on getting things fixed that ending up breaking on a hot Oct day. I never did end up moving to Texas. I have always stayed in California. As for all the other questions, They have all been addressed already many years ago. I am active with the local so cal group of Ferrari guys. If you all want something to do, look at other threads. Ryan is only puffing himself to obtain top lapdog status.
Bottom line is: it's his car and his money. If thats what he wants to do , so-be-it. I can understand completely his reasons and hope that the estimate is such that he goes ahead with it. It will make great reading, be nice if the factory sends pictures of the project. Many people seem way too quick to pass judgement on others with statemants like. "it's only a 308, it will cost way to much, you could buy another car or two for that price, ect." but as Matteo said, it's his 308 and I think these people can't understand that. the only thing cooler than having this done, is going to the factory to watch them do the work, make a vacation out of it and have a once in a lifetime experience. Look forward to more posts.
There were two "ownersurvey" links in the email, one to "Dispatcher" and one to "FOSLauncher". One leads to the "already completed" page, and the other to the new survey. (The other, I think, was to find the information you already filled in when you signed up for the site.)
The $10,000 Boxer was just a joke that got carried too far. There was no Boxer. If you go and read the first or second issue of Velostrada, you can get the whole story. Now, certain individuals are giving Matt a hard time because he has a history of a tall story. I say give the guy a break and see what the factory quote is. Birdman
I do not see anything wrong with Ryan's posts if in fact he never bought a $10,000 boxer? It seems to put a whole different spin on the announcement of sending a 40k car (at best) to Italy for a potenially $$$ restoration? I call that credibility. some joke. He fooled me. Ha ha ha.
Ryan is a good guy. I just think he is being a little hard on Matt. Matt has apologized for the Boxer debacle many times and it's time to let it go. There is enough hostility in the world, we don't need it here. We are all friends here. Birdman
Matt: I think your idea is beyond delusional. I'll bet a CNote you are blow'en smoke. Nobody can be THAT foolish with their money!
Awesome project Matt. I've saw your car once at VCR and it looked great. It's nice to see someone putting that kind of effort into a 308. Maybe (hopefully), you'll set a new standard. We're planning a complete restoration on our 308 GTB sometime once some of our other projects are done. I will for sure follow this thread and can't wait to see the car once it's done whether it goes to Maranello or gets worked on here in So Cal. It will be a great model for other 308 owners to follow.
Correction: Tall STORIES. The Boxer the Prince Bertil 250PF. I'll admit I'm curious to see what the quote is, but have a pretty good idea where this will all go.
After seeing the pictures of that fire, all I could think was, "Uh oh... Another Ferrari fire. Ya know..... They should'a replaced those fuel lines!"
Peter, I don't get it...are you saying that it's not worth it? Why? The 308 is not "good enough" to warrant a factory restoration? Not worth enough? That's kind of insulting to our favorite car! I wish more people were interested in restoring and perfecting the 308 so it could lose the "cheap Ferrari" status. There are a lot more 355s and 360s in the world than 308s now. 308s should start climbing while 355s and 360s start to fall like bricks. A year or two ago I predicted that 355s (falling in price) and 308s (climbing) would pass each other within 10 years. When that happens (and it will), what will a 308 with a certified factory restoration be worth? A 308 is worth whatever its owner thinks it is to him/her (unless he is truly trying to sell it of course!). My 308 is by no means perfect but I wouldn't take a cent under $40K for it at this point with all the work I have done on it getting it "just right." Maybe nobody else would give me that much, but it's worth that much to me. Many people here would value their 308s far beyond that due to sentimental reasons, consourse restoration, or whatever. Just because you can get eBay beaters for $25k doesn't mean that it is not worth restoring one to perfect factory condition if you can afford it. And if Matt (or anyone for that matter) could afford it, and chose to do it, he would have bragging rights that none of us would. Frankly, the whole concept is cool. Maybe it's too expensive. Let's wait and see. When Newman was restoring his 308 to a level far beyond factory condition and documenting it in Tech Q&A, everyone was behind him 100%. What if it had been a guy that didn't know how to do a restoration or had no time, but sent it to a shop to be done, for thousands more than the car is worth? Some people have time/skills, some people have money and no time (job, family, etc). What's the difference? The finished product is the same. Why is one "delusional" and the other not? I can't decide if you guys are all "down" on the idea because it's Matt that has proposed it and you are calling into question his true intentions, or if you just think that this kind of thing is just not worth it for a 308. If this was someone else proposing this, would you all still be poo-pooing it? I would expect a lot more enthusiasm for this kind of thing from the 308 crowd. This can only start a trend that increases 308 values, I would think. (But who knows). Birdman
After all the wrangling in this thread it was interesting to read in C&D about a 300 SL gullwing being sent off for similar treatment by MB. They referred to the factory restoration in blanket fashion as a 3,000 hour process at $100 per hour (parts included). Seamus
Car & Driver did a story (August issue) about Mercedes restoring older cars by the factory in California. A complete restoration is 3000 Hours at $100 per hour. When is Ferrari going to open a restoration shop in the US? I hear that the Mercedes "Classic Center" is a huge success. Before I read this story, I saw a show on Speed channel about this. A factory restored Ferrari, with modern everything (A/C that works, better paint and panel fit, gauges that mean something, windows that go up/down in less then 10 seconds etc.), would be quite amazing. The only problem is that the example that Car & Driver gives of the 1971 Mercedes SL, they are selling it for $79,000.00. I may be wrong, but I'm sure that you can get one in good shape in the $20-$30,000 range. The game here is to only restore a car that is rare (factory restoration). Whether it has rare options, low production numbers or some story about it. I can't see spending that kind of money on your everyday 308/328. But that's my opinion. If you love your car and want to spend equal to what you paid for it, to restore it, then go for it. I can't wait to see the pictures. Its your money, and you should spend it anyway that makes you happy!
