    Tomberlin,

Wonderful photos. I love stuff like this. Looks like a mishap taking the Maserati motor out, (dented nose). Also an interesting car with exhaust manifolds I am not familiar with. Do you know more?

I wasn't smart enough to ask questions then. It just looked to me like parking on the street damage. I was wandereing around Chinetti's when some guy walked up and said "You want to see cars, come upstairs". I didn't remember Maserati making a V-12 until I dug these up. I'd love to know what model the car is. And it was tagged- people drove anything on the street back then.

I saw back in a post saying that there was three 340 Mexico Coupes. I was told by the owner of the only roadster, that there was only two coupes and one roadster. This was back in 1963. The owner, Preston Grey gave me a ride in the Mexico Roadster. The car seemed like a monster to me, being only seventeen, but that ride changed my whole life. I've been involved in race cars ever since. I missed buying the car from Pres for $3000.00, but that was a lot of money for a seventeen year old back in '63. I knew then that the car would be worth something someday. The only Mexico Roadster! The car was painted yellow. I never got the chassis number
Anyone know where the car is now? I could fill the owner in on some history.
I'm new to the forum, I opologize if this info has been posted before.

    Hi William,

Thank you for your post. The 340 Mexico Roaster you speak of is chassis number 0228AT. Below is a picture I took of the car in 2004 at the Monterey Historic races. It has been owned by Lorenzo Zambrano of Monterrey, Mexico since the late 1980s. Did Preston Grey sell 0228AT in 1963? According to my files he was from Scituate, MA. (I grew up in Wellesley and lived in Boston for a few years). I believe the next owner after Grey (since you passed on the deal, understandably) was Tom Hensen. Any other info you have on this car would be much appreciated. Any photos from back then? Thanks again and welcome to FChat!

The picture I posted of the car on the trailer was taken in Wellesley, MA. I wonder if both cars were in that area at the same time?

Lorenzo let me take 0228AT for a lap at Buttonwillow a few years ago. Scary as hell! Too much engine and too little rubber on the ground. Those 50s drivers had big huevos!

MJarrettR, thanks for the fast reply & picture. I can't say I like the Bill Spear blue & white pant, but I guess that's what Bill Spear liked. Must look better in person I bet!
Boudewijn, thanks for the picture of the car painted yellow. That's exactly how I remember the car when Pres Grey had the car. Picture taken at Watkins Glen maybe with no head rest? Pres hammered out a head rest for the car out of brass, that according to Pres's mechanic ( John Harkness) was too heavy being brass! John later went on to work for Sam Posey and dragged me alone with him to work at a company in Marblehead, Mass. called Autodynamics. Sam was racing a 904. I went to work in the fiberglass dept. at Autodynamics.
Pres Grey told me he sold the car to two college kits for $3000.00. I saw the car one night leaving a parking lot burning rubber for a long way down the street. I last saw the car in Braintree, Mass. sitting outside a barn in bad shape. Sometime in '68 thru '70 the car was at a Bob McGiven's house Hanson, Mass. being stored outside his garage for an unknown owner. I can't remember the name.Bob would take the car for a blast up & down rout 27 once and a while. Then the car went down the same road to a Ron Nardi. still in the town of Hanson, Mass. Ron tried striping the paint off. I heard, that the car sat there so long, that Ron would have paid someone to take the car away. After that the car ended up at Dr.Terry Bennet's garage called the "Shad tree Garage" in Boston. That must have been the late '70's. The talk then, was that Terry wanted $40,000.00 for the car. Still out of reach for me! The spare gas tank, shaped like a spare tire with a big Monza gas cap, ended up being left behind in a Toyota dealership in Weymouth, Mass. when Press left working there. I saw Pres Grey two years ago. He still carries pictures of the Mexico in his wallet! He was telling me stories of him racing the car at Watkins Glen and Lime Rock. He said the car raced in the first race held at Lime Rock. That's it!! all know about the Mexico! I guess I'll have to make a replica if I want a 340 Mexico Roadster. The only other Ferrari I had a ride in, was a GTO with LM styling in Westport, Conn in 1966. I can't remember the guy's name, but he owned a design studio. It was just a cool as the Mexico!

William, You must of course know Ray Caldwell fairly well? The man in Westport with the design studio could have been Mr Cucio? A great Ferraristi who made my heart race whenever he drove his open exhaust Daytona to the Saugatuk Post Office, (I worked next door). Real "old school" driving his car daily and ringing its' neck in the process.
    Ciao, David
