Good luck man. Im entertaining the idea right now of enlisting in either the Army or Navy.
Just remember. If it moves salute it, if it stands still paint it. I was in the Navy, Operational Specialist(computerized radar NTDS systems) way back. I enjoyed my time in. I did boot camp in San Diego and A school at Great Lakes (in the winter---brrrrr). Enjoy your time and thank you for protecting my freedoms........... I put my hand upon her knee, yo ho, yo ho, I put my hand upon her knee, yo ho, yo ho, I put my hand upon her knee, she said, "hey sailor you're teasin' me..... Oh, I am digressing. You will have to get the rest from one of the old "shellbacks" that you will meet along the way.....
Doug, Go for the Nuclear Reactor Technician program (Electronics Technician). It is a 6 year program, but over a year is spent in training. Submarines time goes by fast, it can be fun/interesting and if you go missile boats you will have somewhat of a schedule for leave purposes. If you take the test and do well, you want a guarantee for the ET program. You want the guarantee in writing for Electronics prior to signing up, otherwise they will randomly select between Mechanic, Electrician or Electronics. The commercial nuclear program in the US is picking up speed and will looking for more workers in 3-5 years. You would be able to start ~ 70k/year. Just my input, Rich Still in commercial nuclear industry.
They will teach you the following at Great Lakes. Actually its a great group and don't worry about teh ghey jokes - they're just jealous. Besides if you're not on a sub you'll probably have women aboard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWGU3mpfRoM
