Same reason they have seasons for deer, elk, rabbit, squirrel and every other game species. It's important to manage the populations. When numbers get abnormally high in a specific area, managed hunts or other means of limiting the populations are put into effect by local Conservation Departments.

Part of the increase in the population of suburban geese in my part of the country is development. Stormwater rules require retention ponds to stop rapid runoff. Ponds and lush fertilized grass make the perfect habitat for these pooping machines.

Alternatively, you kill just one of them, take it to the taxidermy so it doesn't decay on you, and you'll have a "real dead goose decoy"

So many interesting suggestions to the problem.

So much time to try them.

Have you tried any of them?

Or, were we just wasting our breath?

I do thank everyone for their input, was very much appreciated.

I bought 12" ground stakes online. I hammered them into the ground about every 10 feet around the entire waterfront area. I then strung 2 tiers of white nylon string, first one is about 3" off the ground, the second tier about 8" off the ground. Worked like a charm! First night after installing the fence, I could hear the geese down by the water, and they were pi$$ed! They were honking quite a bit. I was thinking that maybe they got in some how, and expected to see the fence dismantled the next morning, but no, it did it's job.

Only once did I see 1 lone goose make it in, while the rest of the flock were lingering outside of the fence. I don't know how he got in there, but when I ran down there to scare him off, he ran toward the fence, ducked his head under the top tier, and stepped over the bottom tier. He did it pretty damn quickly and easily, I wonder why the rest of the flock didn't follow the lead.

I am very happy, almost all of the poop has disintegrated, and I can actually walk down there without having to look down the entire time.

I will try to post some pics of the setup this week, if anyone is interested in seeing it.

Hope the fence will keep them away but if not, Jeremy Clarkson had a similar problem but with crows. He hired a device that made the sound of a crow in distress. After awhile the crows would get fed up with the repeated distress call and pack up.

    Best, Peter

Here ya go............. You'll notice that the ground stakes have 2 kinks in them...........perfect for keeping the string at the desired height.

    What lake is that?

When I lived in Hamburg Twp on the Huron River Chain of Lakes we did something very similar. We bought reflective tape at the hardware store and strung it across the beach. Very effective.

I just got back from a resort where they strung those multi colored flags on a rope across the beach at night, said it worked great. The strings are much less invasive if they work.

Also some golf courses use fake swans in their lakes...they are natural enimies

    I'm amazed that works!
I guess it tells them "Beach Closed", and they mustn't like that. ;)

    Way to go!

A work friend is struggling with the same problem at her cottage. The geese have totally destroyed their lawn, so she's tried a number of tactics to get rid of them.

First attempt was a string lining the waterfront and sides of the lawn. Worked pretty well for a couple of weeks until the geese figured out they could fly over the string.

She then purchased 12 Scarecrow sprinklers. They work by detecting movement and turning on the sprinkler for about 8 seconds. A bit of noise and the annoying water spray chased the geese away for a few weeks until they figured out there wasn't any pain involved with the noise. Now they graze contentedly under the Scarecrow's blasts.

Next plan is a liquid treatment for the lawn that gives the grass an extremely bitter taste. Down side is that you need to re-apply at about 3-week intervals and after every significant rainfall or the bitter taste disappears.

Because it's only an ever-other-weekend place, a dog is out of the question. She's not holding out much hope for a long-term solution, unfortunately...

Flags do seem to work well. When we had our boathouse in which my father kept his cherished '53 Chris Craft Constellation (which we did not want to have pooped on by seagulls!), we strung flags in the rafters and not only did the problem of gulls flying into the well area disappear but no more small birds either (sprrows, etc...).

Sure beat the hell out of having to tarp the boat every time we brought it back in from a ride!

    Cheers,

I'm certain that Rosie O'Donnell and Alec Baldwin are firing up their Gulfstreams and heading to Washington D.C. immediately. Hopefully the leather seats aren't too uncomfortable for their flights.

I had an ex-girlfriend that kept wanting to snag a goose from the park so she could cook it up, it took 110% effort to restrain her - you want her phone number?

Those !@#$ers returned! I had the same set up as last year, and they seemed to have figured it out. They just step on the top string, and go right over. I tightened the string as much as I could, and they still went over. I will have to get new stakes that are taller. Unbelievable!

    Dan,

What if you ran a line of electric fence instead of string? I don't know if that do more harm than good in your area, but it should help with the geese.

I actually found some construction stakes that are 2' tall, and have 5 drilled holes running up them where I can run string, or some kind of wire, which is what I think I will try this time, like piano wire.

I received the taller stakes, and ran 3 lines of string instead of the previous two. Those !@#$ers still flew out of the water over the string. I could not believe it! Perhaps the string has enough elasticity where they are able to just step on it and it will stretch to hit the ground. This weekend, I will go buy some nylon fishing line in a bright color, and maybe do 5 tiers. If this doesn't work, it will be time to get a gun. This is really getting old. There is so much goose poop down there, it's like walking through a mine field. It's disgusting.
