The logical thing to do is to ship it, but how often will you get a chance to take a real road trip in the thing? Publish a route here and I'd be surprised if you're ever more than a few hours from help of some type. Worst case, you end up shipping it PART of the way.

I agree. That is alot of miles in any car. But if you can plan it out well enough, I guess it can turn out to be a vacation.

I personally would fly out, watch it loaded into the trailer then flyback.

I have owned Ferraris for 20 years and driven two home from Phoenix(1300 mi.) and one from TX(2000 mi.) with no problems. I have also taken several 1000+ mile trips in these cars over the years and never had a break down. Treat it like it's an adventure, I mean what are you going to tell your grandkids for stories; yeah kids I had my Ferrarri trucked home, crap what fun is that!? You need to drive these cars and do proper maintanance on them thats what keeps them running good. I still say drive it home! Regards, Vern

I agree with Kevin, Tillman and Vern on this one. Sounds like the service history is good and the car is up to the task. Drive it!

If you don't want to drive it, why not just have the seller keep it in his garage for you? nyuk, nyuk, nyuk :)
Seriously, it's a great way to bond with the car as well as inspect it yourself before it gets out of the seller's driveway. DRIVE IT!!!

Of course, you should have it transported. Then put in a garage, take out on sunny days out of the garage to be polished and then driven back into garage.
    .... wait !

The whole point of this car is being driven. Pile on the miles and learn to master the car. this is the best headstart you can have

Man you guys are not making this an easy decision, 50%-50% both ways both make sense especially trucking the car but Ferraris don't make logical sense anyway.

I agree on the heat but would try and take a bit of a scenic cooler route through N New Mexico then N Arizona, Texas would be hot, maybe some night driving there.

I could tape up the front with painters tape and the mirrors as well, having the 3m installed would take a day even if it could be scheduled that fast.

Flying in picking up the car seems easy and quick, no storage in the old owners garage with potential last drives that could result in physical or mechanical damage while waiting for the transport company to pick the car up in a few weeks, unless i flew in and put the car in storage at a storage facility then fly back out to organize the loading with the transport company, more hassle.

Trailering the car back would equal 3200 miles of driving both ways thats at least 50 hrs driving considerable as well plus potential damage in the trailer itself if the car comes loose or hitting some huge pothole in the road.

Either decision will result in second guesses I am sure, after 3 or 4 hours first driving through Texas passing all the trucks I am sure I would think what the hell am I doing? Why didn't I ship it. Then the flip side waiting for a few weeks worried about the car waiting for it to arrive I'll think why didn't I drive it ? It would have been an unforgettable experience as well, some of those little small towns I'd be passing though the folks have never seen a Ferrari in person which would be a kick as well.

I would reconsider the Texas drive! I make that trip every year twice and there are so many road issues going across Tx. I have 2 chipped windshields, rock chips galore and unknown amount of blown tires. Since most of the state has oil fields just about everywhere, the service trucks going from oil field to oil field spread rocks and road grime of all sorts. So many big rigs that constanly kick the stuff around, would be prudent to have shipped. If you said San Diego to Monterey or any other road less traveled by commercial vehicles, you would probably be ok.
Good luck with the new car.

Drive it (but only if you know the service history). I picked up mine from a seller in Los Angeles and drove it alone to North Carolina in 34 hours without a single problem, but the alternator quit the day after I arrived home. On the 2600+ mile drive (I-40 all the way) the scenery was boring but it was still an exciting drive to remember.

What I did was trucking my F348 from Germany to Spain, 2200 Km and once in Spain and after driving 100 Km, crossing the country from North to South twice, 2200 Km. Any problem. But speed limits in Spain are higher, of course.

Maybe you could do something similar, drive the car some miles in Texas for the weekend to test and trucking if you feel something wrong or keep on the road to Las Vegas.

If you are like most people, your time is limited. I personally would rather ship the car and use the time to drive it in more interesting areas than just bombing along freeways bringing it home.

    EXACTLY what he said!

I once drove my NSX from Tuscon to Los Angeles one scorchingly hot July day a few years ago. Just as I crossed the California state line, a supercharger pulley melted right off of the car. Oh wait, no problem, let me just pull right into any one of the hundreds of exotic car specialty shops literally lining the highway.
It was a miracle that I was only a 1/4 mile from a rest stop where they had running water, potty and shade. Otherwise, my friend and I would have been phucked big time. I called the shop that the car had been at for the last week (for transmission mods, totally unrelated to the blower pulley) and they just happened to be driving to San Diego later on that day. So all we had to do was to sit around in 110 degree heat for six hours and wait for them to show up to rescue us with some spare parts.
They could have been unavailable. They could have been closed that day. They could have shown up and not had the right parts. We could have broken down fifty miles from the nearest rest stop.
    SHIP THE CAR.

IDEA: Just wrap the car up like Enterprise Rent-a-car does with theirs (you've seen the commercials) and drive it home. I'm not sure about wrap around the windshield area - 1600 miles is a long way without being able to see out.

wrap the car thats what it needs like a big condom

So I am anticipating getting a check engine light from my cats failing so I'll need a big drill bit to hole them out on the highway, then having the headers melt from it, I'll have them refabed by a race car shop cutting in replacement pieces for the burnt corners, $3000 each for new headers from a few suppliers? okay right, time to save some money on the 355 via exhaust fabricators for a simple repair.

Trailer it (enclosed ) . Its the only right thing to do . My car was shipped from 1400 miles away enclosed . It took 4 days to get it . I was lucky & know a guy that delivers exotics . He was heading near where the car was & had an empty spot for me on the way back .You DONT want to be stuck on the side of the road with a Ferrari .

Well, those Acuras are nothing but trouble. Now, a 355 on the other hand was inspected by trained factory Ferrari technicians (during the Clinton Administration) and has a big strong rubber band holding the engine together... ;)

I have found a beautiful young lady that wants to fly in and drive this trip with me, should be an interesting trip since I have only met her twice, especially if the car craps out on the highway.

So it looks like i'll have to try and grin and bear it and drive the car back next weekend, the irony of it all, a fast Ferrari on the open road racking up miles with a hot girl and minimal luggage, what am I thinking?
