    Hey guys,

I finally got rid of my super slow and dinosaur-era electronics RAZR after a year and a half. The phone got fantastic reception, but the user interface was god-awful, and the processor in the phone was slower than molasses going uphill in December. I understand that packaging a phone in such a small package requires some sacrifices, and speed seems to be the #1 sacrifice.

Anyhow, got a SLVR yesterday for $29.99 from CompUSA (the best price I've seen on the phone), and while it is MUCH faster, and has a better build quality, I've found that the reception is much worse. Same network (Cingular), but worse reception.

Any ideas on if this hardware or software related? If it's software, what can I do about it? I live near the mountains in SoCal, and while the RAZR could get call at my home, the SLVR only gives me very choppy reception, making it near impossible to have a phone conversation at home.

    Any help is appreciated

I got my first razr around the same time that you did... and i thought it was decent for the time... My had a software problem in which i wouldn't recieve any calls...(lovely i know!!) I got a replacement phone (this one has the video camera) and it is much much better in my opinion overall as a phone

The slvr seems like a piece of crap.. One on my friends has it and shows it off a ton yet hes always dropping calls etc. Funny thing is that he doesn't think its his phone, he thinks because the phone is expensive that its the best phone in the world... lol

The razr is alot more durable than i thought it would be... I have dropped them many times and other than a few chips the phone has been fine!!

I have a new dark blue razr( apparently pretty rare in the states) and it works fine. It doesn't seem slow to me.

Today I went to Verizon for a new phone, razr was backlevel 3, reflashed firmware, fixed a lot of problems. faster, new browser, better reception, ferwer dropped calls, not losing bluetooth. So we'll see...

I have both, I like my Razr more.

The SLVR looks really neat when it lights up. but everything on it feels "a set lower" then on the razr. (like the screen, functions, etc).

I ended up giving the SLVR to my sister; she likes it.

I recently went from the RAZR to the SLVR and I thought the reception was just the same, in fact, I just got off the phone and the reception was great. I would go to the Cingular store and just talk their heads off until they give you another one. That's worked for me a few times.

Ok, i'm pretty obessed with having all the newest technology, and i'm a daily lurker/poster on howardforums.

    Here's the problem:

With the RAZR V3, Motorola even admitted that it, they put the best antenaena (sp) into the phone, hence the incredible reception. And the antena (i've taken one apart) in the bottom "loop" thing, which means all that is the antena, and it it an aerial antena (sp), so it should be able to get incredible reception.

With the SLVR L7, since they had to make it so thin, they had to skimp on some parts. Hence they put in a VERY small antena, to be able to put a HUGE screen, that it has. I've this one apart, and its anentanna is about 1/4 the size of the RAZR V3's so you would less reception.

I've had both phones, and this is what I've done to somewhat improve the SLVR L7's reception.

Go to setup, and then network, and put it in 850/1900 mode, and not Automatic, which means that the phone will not constantly search for a signal in the 1800 band, which is a Euro. band, and they makes it so that it only operates on Cingular's frequencies.

The biggest problem IMO is that the SLVR is way to thin, and all the cell manufacturers have been in this screwed up competition, to make the smallest, and thinnest phone, which means they skimp on certain features. (in this case, the antena) in RAZR, they made a good looking phone, with Class-leading reception, and a nice phone that fits really nice in your pocket, except they skimped on the features they put in. IT DOESn't even have freaking EDGE!!

I like my SLVR better than the RAZR I had before it. I don't have any reception problems at all, so maybe it's an area thing.

Overall though, I'm getting less and less thrilled with cell phones with each new model I buy. The pinnacle for reliabilty/reception and function as a PHONE for me was still my old Motorola StarTac. God, I miss that phone...

I bought a SLVR about 2 mos ago and haven't had any reception problems, but I live in flat Texas, so it's probably a topography thing.

A friend of mine sold his RAZR and gave me all the software that he bought for it. I now have a ton of software and games that I have no idea how to use. I must have 100 games and I can't figure out how to get them to my phone!

That's what I figured. I just swapped over to 850/1900, but see no difference in reception. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I like the SLVR much more than the RAZR, so I don't want to go back. I want to do something that will make this thing usalbe in my house.

Any of you have experience with this question in the New York/Tri State area? Have a RAZR now, want the SLVR because (with all respect to those who don't agree), for me smaller and thinner always always equals better in a phone (*hate* the bulge of a cell phone in my pocket). Curious as to whether the smaller antenna/worse reception problem is ameliorated any in an area like Manhattan, where there are so many cell towers.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

WHat is the software called? If you can give me the specifics, I can tell you how to get it on the phone. I normally do this for ringtones, and pics for my RAZR. Lot of people don't realize the possibiliites of the RAZRs, and the SLVR's USB (female type-b) port. :) YOu can add themes, and on Verizon RAZRs, you can hack it, so that when you use the internet, you dont need to pay for it.

I have had my RAZR on Cingular since they first came out, and have been very happy with it. The battery life is great, bluetooth if great...better in the Range Rover than the Porsche...the one thing I do hate is the fact that each phone number needs it's own entry, and you can only speed jump using the first letter.

there are 2 setting in the address book, where you can change this to show only the primary number, so not every number is shown. Also, I recall there are several entry mode you can select so you can type in first few letters of the name, then press 'search' for a closer match. Essentially, speed jump with more than just the first letter.
