    Will wonders never cease, ?
Fixed the hazard witch so that my turn signals work reliably with Verell’s help and another Gremlin pops up.
    My car is a 1981 308GTSi.
This has happened 3 times but not all the time.
Engine is warmed up oil is at least 160F.
The engine has gone through the 1000rpm then 3000rpm and back to 1000rpm cycle.
Get off the interstate and the engine does not idle at 1000, some times 3000 or 2000.
Corrected with quick blips of the throttle.
The engine not up to temperature light has never worked since I have owned her (Jan 2005).
I am tempted to lube the throttle cable with graphite or silicone spray.

    Any ideas?

Most likely cause is floor mats fouling your throttle pedal. Its about the most common cause of what you describe.

If that's not it then you'll need to start looking at the throttle system all the way from the pedal through to the linkage at the plenum. There can be issues of sticky linkages at the pedal end.

Thanks I check out floor mats first, then the linkage at the pedal end first.
I already looked at the throttle cable at the engine end.

It did not occur to me the answer would be 'literally' ar my feet.

I've learned to leave my floormat at home. I also had the throttle stick at the engine-see photo, a little grease fixed it. (the roller has to "glide" inside the lever, mine was dragging until I greased it)

It happened to once before the idling was cycling up and down and the problem was an O2 sensor, replaced it and the problem fixed it.

    THANKS to all have replied.
I guess I will have to attach the floor mat, so that my none flexible body won't slide it up.

    Thanks again

This happened to me also. I spent an hour checking various things, lubed the cable, etc. Mat was the culprit.

If I remember correctly, the pollution controls want the car to rev up to about 2800 RPM until it is warmed up and then drop down to idle. The temperature sensor on the bottom of the coolant expansion tank closes when hot to accomplish this. You may want to confirm the proper switch function by pulling off the two wire connector while running and seeing what opening and closing (shorting) does. Disabling this function by shorting the connector full time my be an interim solution. Just a thought.

Start with the MAT. 90% of the time it is the mat...trust me. If not...then pursue the other avenues listed.
