I have a 97 euro 355. When I try to start the engine, twist the key and... nothing for 3 or 4 seconds. No starter motor turning, nada! Then, things start turning and it starts. Please help!

When you say "nothing" do you mean:

    1. Absolutely nothing in the instrument panel comes "on", and the starter solenoid/motor does not engage, or

    2. The instrument lights do come "on", but the starter solenoid/motor does not engage?

Most likely a battery or alternator problem. How old is the battery?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

The instrument panel does go on, but the starter motor does not engage.

The battery is about 1 year old. Should I change it?

If the battery is only a year old, I don't think it would be that unless something was left on several times and it drained down. Most likey bad starter or altenator.

If the engine cranks even after 4 sec. the battery is good.

I had this exact problem on my Alfa, it turned out to be the starter or the starter solenoid, don't remember exactly as the whole unit was replaced and it was a few years ago.
    Hope this is helpful.
