I was sitting in an office yesterday afternoon, and happened to look at a newspaper, and saw that a friend of mine had died. The service were all earlier that morning, so I missed them.

He was 47, single, died from Cancer, and I had not seen him in 2 years as he lived out of town.

He graduated from Iowa State, and had degrees in: Law, an MBA and a Dr. of Vet. Medicine, yes, three degrees. DVM was the one he chose for a profession.

I'm in shock because we used to play tennis and basketball for hours on end in the park across the street from his house years ago, about 30 to be exact. He was in good health, and was of average build, not overweight or out of shape.

I'm still trying to rationalize this, but you can't......... seems like I am losing friends and acquantances every 2 weeks or so now....

Sad. A 22 y/o fellow who worked the bar at his dad's nearby restaurant was killed a couple weeks ago on his moto. My wife and I drove over there for dinner- the place was inexplicably closed. I did a little Internet digging, and suspecting the worst, I called them a day or so later- they confirmed his death. The last time I saw him, a month or so ago, he was showing me his new Gixxer, proud as hell. When I learned of his death, it made me numb- not that he was a close friend, but he was somebody who always had a smile and a nice word. I cannot imagine the pain his family is suffering.
Death is often harder for those left behind.
My condolences. (As to aging, no worries- I am 51 and the people dying around me, from disease, accident, or whatever, just instill in me the determination to live life to the fullest, every waking moment).

I've been there many times, in both spheres...family and friends. It just doesn't surprise me anymore, even when someone relatively young, like your friend, goes.

Last week I was helping a friend pack up; his wife...early 50's...has maybe a month to live from end-stage breast cancer. She wants to get out of Dallas and spend her final days in a beautiful natural environment so they are headed for Hawaii

    Franco....

I don't know what words I could say that could make you feel better.........so I won't say anything...........

I had a really good buddy commit suicide with a pistol 3 years ago, a normal working Joe, nothing special, just a great guy anyone would want to hang out with, we got together and drank beers together every Friday "Happy Hour" for probably 15 years..............went to his funeral with about 500 other friends of his that day.......never seen a crowd like that before at any funeral, a full church and people on the lawn and in the street.......needless to say the sadness that day overwhelmed many of us.......

I haven't been hit with a death since 1999. The father of a close school friend of mine died the day after undergoing an operation. He was released, and in his still sedated state, fell over and hit his head in the bathroom at home. Was discovered 2 days later by his ex wife. It's the only funeral I've ever been to, as well.

Every day that goes by means it is statistically more likely that there will be another one.

    My sympothy for your loss.

I know it is of little consolation but I may offer this idea regarding death from Socrates/Homer.

Every man awaits the same fate: to die. However we know nothing of what death is or what it means. For fear of the unknown we believe it to be a bad thing. However, Socrates greeted his death on that very basis. Just as it may be feared, it may also be the best thing to happen to each of us. There just isnt any way to tell. The most important thing is to choose to live your life in your terms while here and leave dying to itself. It will come for you when its ready. Nothing to be feared, but sadly it does leave those behind with a sense of deep loss. That is perhaps the most tragic aspect of death. That said, drink to life and enjoy everyday because history is a blink of an eye and the future rushes to greet us.
