My 78 308 had 35k miles and had a new belt placed approximately 2k miles ago and 2 years. On start up the belt squeals for just a few seconds until it warms up. Should I look into replacing the belt?

Sorry, I did not do a search first and realize how this topic had been discussed so much.

The timing belts won't squeal. You're hearing an accessory belt. I don't recall if the 308 has a separate belt for the alternator and water pump or if they're the same on that one, but on my 328 the alternator location needs to be adjusted every 9 months or so to prevent that belt from squalling at low rpm. It's an easy job, although getting the 17mm wrench on the backside of the alternator is a pain.

My '79 308GTB has a similar issue. It clicks and snaps when started cold! It turns out that an incorrect-size accessory belt was installed, one that was a little too narrow. The belt rides too low in the V-groove and tends to stick there on the release-side of the pully. The snapping sound is the belt snapping out of the V-groove. That one took a LONG time to diagnose.

Replaced or adjusted. When I got my 308 it was doing the same thing, about 50 miles later the water pump/ alternator belt broke.

I looked around and found two belts ( with teeth). When I start the car, if I do not acelerate , it does not squeal. If I give it some gas while starting, it does squeal a little. After 1 minute, it does not squeal at all- no change with air conditioner or or off. Where is the water pump belt and is it easily accessible. I am thinking tensioner also.

Now that you post this, I remember I had the same issue on my Mondial QV. The problem was the bearings (busings) in the alternator. The alternator was so difficult to turn, the belt was slipping. Broke the belt too. That's when we found the all-but locked up alternator.

Slipping alternator belt (also runs water pump). When the car is cold, the alternator is under lots of load recharging the battery drained by starting. Thus the belt slips at the beginning, but once the car is warmed up and the battery charged, the alternator has less load so the belt no longer slips.

Get the belt adjusted or you will be left somewhere when it breaks. The red charge light will come on. Pull over quickly before you overheat the engine.

There's a special tool for adjusting the tension properly. See http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107474.

I thhink you are correct. Can I adjust the tension on the belt or is this better left to the more experienced?

    Umm,
Thats a tough call. If you have no experience adjusting alternator belts on cars, then best let a pro. do it.

If you adjust them routinely, go ahead. You'll find that the 308 belts are much thinner than those on most cars, hence need to be noticably tighter.

Search the Tech Q&A for my post on how to loosen the alternator adj. bolt.
