I came home early to work on a project and my dog greeted me all covered in burs. There was not one square inch on his body that was not coated with burs. He must have rolled in them. You couldn’t do a better job of coating him with these things if you tried. Then, to top it off, he went swimming in the lake to really get them matted in deep. His coat is like a sheep’s so the things stick like mad especially in wet fur. After working on him for about 5 hours I have got about 85% of them off. Anyone who has any good way of getting these things out let me know as I still have more to go and the damn dog will probably do it again as soon as I let him out.

Agreed--shave the poor guy. Especially if the burrs are seasonal, then you won't have to worry about them for a while. One thing to be careful of, though, is sun exposure on his skin. Dogs can get bad sun burn if you're not careful.

My housemate is from Kenya, and her b.f dog just died from a needles. One went threw its heart, when they were removing them, they pulled out the one in its chest and it was about 4-5 inches long and the dog collapsed...sad story.

My beastie thanks all of you for the support. I thought shaving him would be the easiest thing to do for both of us, but he already had a summer cut and the things were in so deep he would about have to have been shaved bald. This would not be good in the Texas summer sun. My solution was to sit down with him with a wire pin brush and a comb and put in the hours. I have gotten most of them out while trying to avoid pulling out his hair. The rest will have to wait till I feel like attacking him again. Here is his after shot, trying to look pitiful in order to acquire some ice cream. I hear my wife in the kitchen, I think it is working.

We had a lengthy conversation about it in the hours I was deburing him. However, I am not sure that it sunk in. He has a hard time grasping the actions and consequences equation. To him 1+1=bacon. In his mind, pretty much everything ought to equal bacon. We will see how he does over the next few days. If he has not learned then he will be spending his days inside. Of course, with the heat outside and air conditioning inside, that may be part of his master plan.

Lloyd, sounds like your dog is as much a family member as our dogs. :). It's amazing how these bastards grow on you isn't it?

Got it. Has he grasped the term, "saved your bacon"? He may need to ponder that before he tries it again. ;)

My wife uses the same training technique on me. "Nick, take out the trash and I will make you bacon for breakfast." I LOVE BACON. I think I have the bacon gene. If I were a drug sniffing dog and drugs were bacon and the grease was the sweet poision, I could sniff a teaspoon of that wonderful elixir under a ton of onion. Poets would write verse of the mad, mad bacon sniffing man.

This almost leads to a Poll question:

If you had to get rid of one, what would you get rid of ?

    1) My pets

    2) My Ferrari

I would have added a 3rd (The Wife), but that would be waaay too easy...
