Okay. That's pretty conclusive. (Good research, BTW.) I'll fall back on my late 70s early 80s scenario. I guess I'll just have to sell off the car for some really cheap price and get another one with the correct pouch!

    Not at all,
please don't take it as a personal attack nor a witch hunt.

You are in the midst of research by Dino-philes that really want to know what the factory was producing. Visit the Factory today (highly recommended tour) and you'll see a proper assembly line, detailed drawings, and specific work instructions.
Back in the day, it was more art than science. Many Italian cars had different items included in them that were based on supplies at the time which makes this all more interesting. This also is why some owner's become more and more entralled with their cars every day.
I believe DM/WS/Others have found "interim" pouches that did not match the basic 3 types that I always knew about.

As an aside point, this is the way it was in Italy during this exciting period, they were producing more cars on a daily basis than they ever had before. Sequential serial numbers did not guarantee that the cars would leave the factory in that order. Sometimes the car was pushed aside "on hold" waiting for a part to arrive or an installer to attend to it or a strike to conclude.

dinodan ---a very interesting back and forth about the characteristics of your rare color Dino! The 'correct' concept is very big around here. I like the 'no holes' in the 3 spoke steering wheel. Much nicer than the other styles that came before and after your steering wheel. You mentioned that the Dino had sat at the dealer for some time before it was purchased. One wonders if someone got cold feet and backed out of a purchase or if the Dino was ordered for stock in that neat color. Can't imagine the sales manager having a cup of tea and deciding to order that special color on the spur of the moment...

Don't worry! I don't take it the wrong way. I wish I could remember how the pouch that we have came into our possession...

    Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say 'nice color' as well. I believe Bonham's Gstaad had an early '76 308GTB fibreglass that same color, owned by the gent shot to death over his F40, remember?

Before the great Fchat crash there were photos....

And I don't care about the pouch...LOL! Keep 'em runnin'!!!!

My blue 308GTB sat at Ron Tonkin three years...that'll teach 'em to order anything but red, red, red, and more red....!

    Well, I'll be......thanks!

I wanted to jump in on that one pretty badly, moldy interior and all!

Bank that had them let them moulder in a underground parking facility..

Couldn't get things lined up in time. Just as well, auctions are horrible to use to buy, but I thought the story was pretty cool..it's still out there somewhere.

They need to fix that rear valence if they are going to run that four tip ANSA though...see how we are????

These Dino guys are sticklers for correctness, down to the yellow shop rag.....LOL!

Me, I drive the Ferrari Art Car, recently mentioned in the New York Times!!!
And Cavallino #133.......that's #22127, but the other car subbed in the parade one year, also.

    Good to meet ya!

Could be that somebody backed out. The Register shows a production date of November '73, and we picked it up in London sometime in the spring of '74. Late spring I would say, as I remember driving it back to our house (100+ miles) with the top off on a beautiful day. Somewhere in an album there's a picture that my mom took of my dad and I as we pulled into the driveway of our house that day. You're right. It's hard to imagine the dealer ordering one for inventory in that color, but then it was the 70s, the era of very rich (and very stoned) pop stars.

I just found them in an album. Unfortunately, I don't have a flat bed scanner, but I'll see what I can do with my camera. Don't expect much, all my mom used was a cheap little Kodak!

Here goes. Three photos. Not much quality, I just took "pictures of pictures" with my camera. It must have been fairly early in the spring of '74 (April probably) as the trees are just starting to put out leaves. We had just arrived home in the new car. That's me, age 21, in the background of the first photo. I had taken a year off from college in the states to work in a garage and take classes at the Jim Russell driving school. My mom is holding the flowers that H.R. Owen presented to new owners.

I'm sure there are more photos around from other times with the car. Are you guys really interested in this stuff?

Who cares about the picture quality - they are enough to see the smiles in the first photo that tell the whole story. Simply awesome :)

Sometimes the 'effort' counts more than the quality. Very nice to see the old period pictures of the Dino, on English plates!

Later that same year, we got one of those stick-on British plates for the front, like you see on E-Types in the old movies. It looked really cool. I might have a pic someplace...

A couple of additional photos. (You asked for it.)

First is from later in '74, after we put on the Jag-style UK front number plate.

The second is from the Montcrest Concours in Laurens, SC in June of '88 (Ferrari vs. Porsche). Double winner! Judges' Choice and People's Choice awards.

That smile covers his whole face!!!!

    What great pictures.

You are indeed fortunate to have these things shared with your family.

Support for my Ferrari ownership is pretty thin on the ground. My favorite Uncle seems to relish it though, having owned a Dino.......

"Just figure a thousand dollars a month in repairs and you'll be OK" LOL!
And he owned it when it was new!

an interesting note, in the "just picked up the car pictures" you have no side mirrors. in the "just added the numbers" picture you have a drivers side mirror. finally, in the "awards" photo, you have both a drivers side and passenger side mirror.

not that this is of great importance, but we have debated several times about side mirrors.

Good observation. When the right-hand-drive car came to the States, we added a second mirror to the left side fender (above the wheel arch) to help with lane changing and merging. (Spyders of course have a substantial blind spot anyway, and this was aggravated by the RHD configuration.) After careful evaluation, it was determined that a left-side door-mounted mirror would not have been nearly as effective. So, the car is somewhat assymetrical. If you go back to the early photos in the post (chronologically most recent), you'll see what I mean (also visible in the "awards" photo if you look closely). Practical, but perhaps less than correct...

In general, the small door-mounted chrome mirrors are, I think, the most correct. I believe that (correct me if I'm wrong) they're what was fitted at the factory as an option. The "Sebring" mirrors on our car are at least period-correct, and were widely used on racing cars in the early 70s. Ours were recently replaced with NOS.

As an aside, I am considering installing a forward-looking miniature video camera (similar to the back-up units found on RVs) in that left-side mirror, with an LCD monitor mounted in the cabin in some non-invasive manner, to assist in passing on two-lane roads. That being one of the biggest drawbacks to driving a car with the steering wheel on the "wrong" side. It won't score me any points in a concours, but I think it would be pretty cool!
