Besides which, humanity can't do any of the things you just said. And none of the current trends are even wholey tracebale to humanity anyway.

Uh... wow, predicting an apopcolypse eh? 500 years from now I expect this world to have some pretty nifty technology, frequent space flights and hopefully a few space elevators. Not to mention beating a good additional number of diseases etc...

The thing you don't get is that the Earth is infact 4.5 billion years old, and in those 4.5 billion years it has changed IMMENSELY. Hell its possible that we, technologyically developed humanity, are only here because of a fluke in the warming and cooling cycles of earth anyway... Nevermind that we're over-due for a big time natural disaster.

Yes I know the post I am responding to is almost a month old. I could have sworn I made this same rebuttal back then.

When it comes to defending ourselves from said asteriods, the most important thing is detecting them as far off as possible. The further away they are, the less drastic a change we need to make in its heading to miss us (or trap it in our orbit for mining purposes....).

I dont believe all civilization will end in 2012 or 2014 but I definately believe that something big is comin our way. Just take your pick: superbug pandemic, dirty bombs, supervolcano, earthquake, North Korea, full out war in the Middle East AKA Armageddon, mass starvation of billions, asteroid, real oil crunch, ET. Maybe in 2010 I'll buy a farm far inland & get a nice big Hummer H1 & mod the engine so it runs on anything, I suppose I'll need an armory too

To my surprise, the Kalachakra prophecy, The Seneca Indian Prophecy, and The Cherokee Calendar Wheel, (UPDATE 23/10/2002: and Steven McFadden's new essay on Mayan priest Carlos Barios), all seem to indicate that there is a 25-year "time of transition" before 2012, so it seems that 1987 was an important time, and that 25 haabs later, (after 4th May 1987), on 27th April 2012, the "Crossing" will start. Alternatively, if Shearer's dates were right for some reason, then 25 haabs after August 16/17 1987 will be August 9th/10th 2012. A third possibility is that 25 haabs before winter solstice 2012, was the key date - 28th December 1987.
