360 CS track worthy?

I know this is a loaded question, but I have been waiting and waiting for the new 997 GT3 RS. I now have final conformation that it will have a sunroof. I do not want a sunroof car.

So...I got to thinking about what else is out there, what is cool and track worthy. The only other car that came to mind was the 360CS.

I do like to track and hold a few different club racing licenses (BMW/POC/PCA/SCCA/NASA...) so I will track the car.

I had a 996 GT3 and did about 12k track miles on it and it was flawless, absolutly bullet proof. All it needed was fluids, pads, rotors, and tires.

I loved the car. Thinking back, I am not sure why I sold it and yes I do kick myself for selling it, but cant buy it back and dont want a used one.

My question is, how track worthy and reliable do you guys think the 360CS will be on the track?

What items will go first and why?

Why would a sunroof turn you off to a car? I understand not wanting a sunroof, but why totally reject it? As far a a CS goes, I can't comment. I have, however, tracked my 360 Modena and loved it. I have never had any mechanical issues due to tracking it. In fact, other than a flat tire from hitting road debris, the 360 has never given me any trouble.

There is actually a top gear comparison that you can find on youtube. I would give you the link, but youtube isn't working for me for some reason. Search for it and you should find it.

 

Why would you consider a used CS but not a used 996 GT3? Also, if you do that much track driving, why not get a real race car like a GT3 Cup or RSR and just use it on the track?

 

The CS is a very track worthy street car.....but not a race car by any measure.

The CS and GT3RS are very different cars, but both great fun.

I currently own the CS because of personal issues with Porsche; abandoned factory supported racing, focused on a SUV to save the company, unremarkable styling and engineering.

 

Cosmo, I have seen your posts on rennlist (I have a 05 GT3). I think you are making a mistake not buying another 996. There are plenty around that have plenty of warranty (or like me get the factory extended warranty), then take $5k or so and build exactly what you want. All in your total cost will probably well under $95k or 50% a CS. I am on the list for a 997 RS as well, but dont think that the configuration (or price) will cause me to jump. An F car is a whole other animal. Why reinvent something? Just because you are sorry you sold your 996 does not mean you can't go for round 2. Prices are coming your way.

As for a true track car, I was just giving an example that I do track my cars and have POC raced the 996 GT3, but now going foward I do not believe that I will be tracking as often, so a real race car is out.

I also just sold my M3 race car, so I really have no need for another race car right now.

 

I believe your info is wrong, the gt3rs will not come with a sunroof, perhaps the gt3 only, not the rs.

Still a naive question, of course the CS is trackworthy.

 

I recieved my information from PCNA's assistant to the Marketing Manager. I was told that all 997 cars regardless of model, GT3, OR GT3RS will have sunroofs.

This was after I sent a letter to PCNA CEO.

 

I doubt it. Doesn't make sense for rs to have sunroof.

The sunroof thing has been beaten to death on 6speed and rennlist. ALL 2007 997 WILL HAVE A SUNROOF!

So 997 GT3 with a sunroof is a good compromise as long as head room is not a factor. Someone will think of a great fix for the sunroof on the GT3, the P-car guys are great at that stuff.

 

The CS is ok on the track. I think some people really enjoy it, I was disappointed when I took mine to PIR. Don't get me wrong..it is a fun car, but not what I expected.

Not sure exactly what you're aiming for here...but if you want one car that can be both a track/street combo with no mods...a CS is a great choice. If you want to start tinkering and improving your ride...a Porsche is really hard to pass up.

I've currently have a CS and had a 360 Challenge and modified a street Porsche 993 for POC/PCA/NASA races. If you want to know more..ask away (to prevent me from straying off topic..heaven forbid)

 

Porsche offers a no sunroof option with their cars, but they don't lower the price because of this. I know the 996TT had this option.

 

They are correct, ALL 997's had, have and will have sunroofs in the US. This is not deleteable.

Cosmos, FWIW I have a standing order (1st on the list) for an RS too. But I'm thinking it will be a GT-3 with trick paint, carbon wing and some suspension bits.

My real question is will it be saleable for profit and then I'll turn around and buy a regular GT-3 or a used CS and pocket a few bucks.

Actually if it looks like a Real Keeper I will keep it. Production will be quite limited so maybe this is "The One".

It's really going to be a feel issue.

just canceled gt3 order.
will kill off rs as well. and i also have confirmation the there will be a hole on top of rs.

evan, just get another 996GT3. look around. pay a bit more, you can find prestine one's with 2-3k miles.

 

taking the gt3 oct build, undecided on "rs", about decided no on the cgt , and getting jealous of all you guys getting f-cars!
i'd like an f430 spider! but i don't want to pay near cgt price for one!

CS is a fabulous car, on and off the track. Biggest concern is the cost of replacement of the ceramic brakes; probably could be replaced with some sort of Brembo GTRs like the Challenge Cars and store away the ceramics until later. My only "gripe" about the CS relates to the tires; terrible wear with the Pirellis and not a lot of other great choices out there. Might try MPSCs.

My worry for you about the GT-3 is not only the sunroof, but that you will drop another $15-25k into it doing various mods. Also not sure how you might like the PASM.

I am going to likely pass on the GT-3RS; nothing really that special about the car as compared to the GT-3 and I am likely to start the extensive mod process on it as well. I am looking forward to the 430 CS in the long run.

You are right about how much will go into the 997 GT3. I have to do just the basics. Seats, wheels, cage, pads, rotors, roof and who knows what else to make it right.

That's one more thing that upsets me is that the ROW gets the club sport options for free, we have to "ala cart" it here in the USA from the dealers.

I think the CS is out for me at least on the track. I have heard horror stories about the hydraulic F1 pump and a few other things.

I would spend the money on the GT3, but spending the extra money on the CS and then have to fork out another $30k for brakes and who knows what on tranny issues is not what I really feel like doing...even if it does sound like a Greek Siren.

We are on the same page as to the cost of bringing a US
GT3 RS spec car to Euro standards. Part of the reason I decided to go "wild" on the 996 GT3 and made it well beyond the RS standard. Probably will be into it for the same price as a 997 GT3RS with seats, belts, rollbar new and in the end, there will be no comparison.

Your reasons are also probably why I don't track my CS but rarely. Hard to beat a 996GT3 for street and track - mild or wild.
