For the time, effort and really little expense in the long run, just get new nuts (somehow, reading that statement just doesn't sound right, but hopefully you know what I mean...).

I have alot of paperweights like these after doing my engine, but as I said, time, money, effort and piece of mind is worth so much more.

    Peter,

Unfortunatley :( I agree. I've already in the process of ordering them.

It's just that the one on the right in this picture is still in such great shape and it really seems a bit of a waste. Especially when one of the searchable part sources wants $40 bucks a-piece for the nuts!

Well, this weekend I finally got into the gearbox!

Here are some pictures of the progress so far:

(Disclaimer: Please forgive me for some of the nomanclature, as I am a DIY'er, and may not know the correct technical term or name for a given part or procedure; Though I have a fairly decent understanding of the mechanical principles involved with this, or I'd never attempt to do it myself. Now, having said that; Follow what I've done, at your own risk. I assume no responsibility for any repairs you perform yourself, on your own or any other car. This information is provided here to help me document what I have done. And for your humor, of course!)

I removed the ring-nuts and bearings. and then attempted to tug gently (by hand) on the two facing gears, to see if they would come loose. (see first picture) And they did not.

Both would move, or wiggle a bit, and the one on the left (the short shaft) side, is very loose and would probably come out, except for the syncro behind it, that bumps up against the gear on the right. But the right gear appears to be knocking against something inside the box. And I assumed it would be the forks.

So I turned the box over and removed the cover. (pic 2)

I should note here that prior to taking picture 2, I also removed the bracket that holds the shift levers (3rd & 4th pictures). These pictures show how it interacts with the end of the shifting arm and the other end of the dog-ears engage the brackets on the shafts that move the forks, (5th picture) which select the various gears to engage.

In the previous pictures, I put the levers back on the gearbox, simply to take the pictures and show where they go. But at the time that I took the pictures, I'd already removed the shafts that connect connect to the locking collar and forks, that you can see in 2nd picture above.

In order to remove the forks, that I suspect are holding the gears inside the box, I removed the nuts that fasten to the collars and the forks, and then slide the shafts out.

When removing the middle shaft, I heard something drop inside the case. I fished it out and it looked like a little metal Tic-Tac. Pulling the middle shaft out from the center wall of the gearbox, I noticed that the shaft had a small hole going through it. The little tic-tac fits inside that hole. See the 1st picture below.

After working a bit to get some of the brackets loose from the shaft, I looked down below and outside the gearbox and saw the following little bearing laying on the cloth. I had no idea where it came from, until I looked up and saw another one. See pictures 2nd and 3rd pictures below.

The ends of the shafts have grooves that apparently lock into each position, by the use of these bearings. As you can see from the 3rd picture, there are three holes in the gearbox housing. One for each shaft. At the top of the box (seen the 4th picture) you can see that there are holes to access the springs that apply pressure to the bearings on the shafts. The 5th picture shows where the spring go. The hole on the right, also has a small plug that holds the last spring in the deepest hole.

So, My current dilemma is to figure out how to get the top/left most gear in the picture below off of the shaft.

Once that gear is loose, I believe the ones on the bottom shaft will easily slide off, along with the remaining gears on the top shaft.

Then I will be able to check for proper clearances on all of the gears and syncros, replace parts where needed and then reassemble.

So the saga continues..... And when I get the answer, you can be sure I'll post it here!

Until then, thanks again for watching!

    Thank you Chris!

These are very intricate and tightly compacted cars to work on. There's so little clearance on everything. And much more so than anything I've ever done before like BMW's and Alfa's. This is my first time with a Ferrari. A little fun. A little frustrating at times. But it'll be well worth it in the end.

And I'll even have some new and interesting tools afterwards!

Now... If I only had a lift!

Well, I've discoverd (Thank you Newman!) that I have to pull the cover off of the other side of the gearbox, and remove the other two ring-nuts. That will give a little more play in the shafts, and allow enough room to slide the gears off.

Here is a picture of the removal of the cover and what the little gears look like inside, that turn the speedometer sesnor:

(Note: these two pics are copied from another post in the "Technical Q&A" Section of F-Chat.)

Pic #1: Is preparing to remove the cover
Pic #2: Is what it looks like inside. The gear on the end of the shaft, turns the gear inside the cover, which in turn (pun intended :p ) turns the speedometer sensor.

Removed the gears today and finally had a look at the syncros. After removing the ring-nuts from the back side, I was able to slide the shorter shaft out a little bit. The balls from the bearing fell inside the case, and you can see them in the 2nd picture.

    Pictures:

    1) Empty case after removng the shorter shaft and gears
    2) The other side of the case, with the bearings still in the bottom
    3) All of the pieces that came out
    4) Showing the clearance for the 2nd gear syncro (still has some)
    5) Pulling the syncro loose
    6) The back side of the syncro. (looks a little burnt)
    7) Showing the clearance for the 3rd gear syncro (no clearance)
    8) Pulling the syncro loose
    9) The back side of the 3rd gear syncro

The 2nd gear syncro has some clearance, but I havent measure it. You can see a little daylight bewteen the syncro and the sleeve.

But the back of the 2nd gear syncro is very rough and looks burnt. So I'm going to replace that one too.

The 3rd gear syncro doesn't look as bad on the back as the 2nd gear syncro, but I know that the 3rd gear syncro is shot, and you can see from the picture that it has no clearance at all.

So, time to order another syncro gear.... <sigh>

    Hey Chris!

    Thanks for asking.

I bought the 2nd syncro just to be safe, and still have to get the new ring nuts ordered. I'll do that in the next few days.

Work has been pretty crazy lately, so I've been letting the car sit. But my job ends Friday and I am anxious to get back fixing the tranny and getting in re-installed.

Just refied the house too, so I've got a little cash to put into it as well. So I may take the tranny to some guy in Newport that Brian Crall referred me to (if I can ever find the name again!) and let him assemble it, just to "be sure", and also to have a "receipt". Although I'm not sure of the value in that, since I've been documenting it pretty well here anyway.

Seems to me that all I really have to do at this point is "put it back together"! So.... I'll have to see what this guy wants to charge me first.

Other than that, I hope to be back on the road again soon. Feberuary? March? April? 2007? 2008? 2009? no no no!! Just kidding. Soon. REAL SOON!!!

    Thanks for the encouragment guys!

Thrown out of the house? What house? I've been living in this little cage in the backyard since I bought this car! :p

    Just kidding of course... (almost)

No matter what they say climb, it's still just a piece of machinery. It comes apart. It goes together. It makes you sweat. It makes you frustrated. Sometimes (like my rear window) it almost brings you to tears.

But the best thing it does, is put the :D on your face when you're screaming onto the freeway in 3rd gear.

And THAT's what keeps me motivated.

Took the gearbox to Auto Gallery yesterday. Eric Sanders is going to assemble it for me.

After a brief look, he said some of the gears were pretty worn. Probably the result of an over-enthusiastic early owner of the car. So it looks like it may cost me a little more than I expected. <ugh>

Oh well... At least I know it will be done right. And, I'll also have a receipt that I can put with the other receipts (like the one for fortunate engine rebuild) that I did not know existed when I bought the car.

This is good. And good timing too. It's getting towards Sprintime and I'm hoping to find a few voulenteers to share in a, "Pizza/Beer/ (or BBQ?)/Pool/set-the-engine-back-in-the-car party" once the weather gets a little warmer. Any takers?

Hopefully, this will all be done before the meet in... Calistoga? St. Helena?

That'll be another fine opportunity to look at the ranch I'm hoping to buy in Pope Valley!

    Cheers!
