I started seeing new phones coming out (Verizon's 'chocolate' for instance) that has GPS Navi system integrated into the phone. Does anyone know of any apps that I can use to make my Treo 650 do the same thing? What if I upgraded to the new Treo? Any other PDA/Phones that already have the GPS Navi system in them?

there is a third party sdcard module that connects to a garmin-like gps

i am so over my treo, i am waiting for the newest HP 69xx for built-in, no-add-on gps. the hp 65xx has it built in too.

some service providers do data over the voice line so you are paying a gps access fee, look for it.

I have seen some applications I think on www.palm.com . They go all the way up to a few hundred bucks last time I checked. I got over the Treo buzz myself but they are still very handy. I work at Verizon and just got the new LG VX8500 (The Chocolate). It has a program called VZNavigator that works anywhere you have a digital signal. Pretty effective if you mainly run up and down the interstates.

i walked into the local verizon store a few days ago deadset on buying a chocolate for the sole purpose of having NAV on my phone. Much to my dismay, rather than it being an application in the phone, it is actually a universal appilcation that any phone can run via VCAST. When I found this out, I saved myself 500$ (retail on chocolate) and had them load NAV on my Verizon Razor V1.

For the record, verizon charges 10$ per month for having NAV on your phone regardless of whether you use it

Dave, the GPS we used on the trip will fit on your phone with a special adapter IIRC. I will do some research and let you know for sure.

See, that is what I am saying! I believe the phones that have the unit built in are free, the ones that require gps via cell tower charge you. The Treo add-on is no longer available though. So I am waiting for my HP 69xx http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=927

then again, this is fchat and we do like to spend money ;)

If you go to vzw.com they have a flash demo of it. Seems ok, very similar to the standard funcitons of any NAV but with an obviously balky interface (being limited to the phone). IIRC they offer the choice btw a per use fee of $2.99 or a monthly service.

Prolly not a good substitute for a real NAV, but should work in well enough if you need NAV and don't have another option.

Navigation is 2.99 daily or 9.99 unlimited. It does works on a few but not all of our Vcast phones. I just won a Chocolate and downloaded my free month of it. Works pretty good but if your out of range of a digital tower your out of luck.

Do you have the bluetooth GPS reciever that links with your treo650? I just found that on ebay. Looks pretty trick.

That would be a great solution... The bluetooth unit probably wouldn't be a target for thieves if left on the dash. I hate leaving electronics visible in the car because I have the worst luck about getting my truck broken into. It hasn't happened in a few years but my vehicles have been broken into several times, at different locations and times of day. Now I'm paranoid.

yeah - the little wireless "brick". i don't leave it out - i just chuck it in the glove box or console box or my briefcase - wherever - it's teeny.

    two drawbacks of note:
    A) because it's always on when you're nav'ing your phone will go through its battery faster (good excuse for a car charger).
    B) the T650 OS can't multi-task. so if you're nav'ing and you get a call you can answer the call and when you're done go back into nav. but while you're talking, you get no nav. if you live on the phone when you're in your car, this is a show-stopper.

Multitasking isn't a deal breaker, I am on the phone alot but once I plan a route and scale the map to see where it's sending me, I think I am in good shape

Thanks for all your info guys (Doody especially). I'll give the Tom Tom system a try.
