Finally, after the red mist has slowly dissipated, I can start to write semi coherently about the 5 days with one girl, 14 blokes and 11 high performance cars.

You can’t imagine how good it was to be able to drive a car to its capabilities, legally! It’s such an incredible thrill. The lack of fear of losing points or licence makes it an absolute joy. The only other time you can do this, to a certain degree, is either on the track or in organised rallies such as Targa etc.

The amount of resources that went into the outback trip is testimony to the passion of the people who participated. The cars where amongst the best road going examples of sports and grand touring machines around. The sexier Lamborghini and Ferrari marques added the glamour whilst the panzers more than held their own. The new TT porker was the fastest 0-100 and 30-180, the rest of the field were pretty even above those speeds. It was just magic to feel the almost relentless power at the top end.

Would you believe we also managed to see some lovely Australian outback and met some other people on the way?.…Their names and sex can’t be revealed due to fear of incrimination or libel suits.

I can see this being an annual pilgrimage of great value to the soul.

Thanks to all who participated and made it a great few days in the red mist.

here's a pic of mhh's ///M5 journey computer (which i'm now quite handy with :) ) which shows the final stretch of unlimited stuff between Uradildo and Alice. unlimited starts/ends 20km out of alice, and the F40 monument is about 100km out.

we stopped a few times and there were at least a dozen anchors-on! moments due to lots of wedge-tailed eagles on the road scarfing down some fresh roadkill.

still, at a *very* cruisy pace and stopping for a good 20 minutes to climb a hill and shoot the panzer patrol coming through (the earlier aerial shot from mhh) we still managed an average speed of 148km/h, but you gotta love those fuel figgers.... 18L per 100km. :D

edit: let's try uploading the pic this time

    oh and YES PLEASE!

that was so easily the best sounding car on the trip... in fact... EVER.

i'm not sure how many of you have been standing on the side of the road as a lamborghini V10 goes by at 300kph hitting the overrun and popping as it brakes hard.... ( :p ) but god dam it will take a long time and a very special car to beat that noise. i have video of the moment, but unsure as to whether that sound will translate to tinny computer speakers. :(

the F430 was as good a sounding car as you could ever hope to hear, but it held nothing against scary.

i remember when i was unloading the lambos from the truck i asked scud about the sound of his car as i knew it was an 06 like mhh's SE... he said "it sounds good, but it's pretty tame compared to the orange one". i didn't know what he was on about till i heard it.

as you can see, it wasn't exactly ugly either.... just wow. :)

My strongest memory of [scary] was seeing it for the first time on the Glen Helen run - in the mirrors and getting closer by the minute. It had the sun right on the bonnet and it looked as though it was making its own light. With the outback colours and the road for contrast, it was something to behold. And yeah, it sounded good too....

While we are waiting for more pics, any thoughts on what cars are most needed on the next run? The Zonda idea got us going for a while, but in a practical sense what cars should we really lobby hard for? The 997 Turbo was about as good as we could hope for this year - new, fast etc, but it is less likely that MOTOR will come on the next trip, so we need to find something as good to give some extra interest to the line up.

I liked having a mix of supercars and saloons, so something along the lines of an Audi B7 RS4, ///M and AMG models are nice to have along.

The LP640 should be a goer next hopefully, and I'd love to see some of the older supercars (F40, F50 - ;) ) make an appearance.

A BD9 from Sadelaide and the LP640 would be very nice additions.

How many cars would be too many? Well we've got some time to think about that and more cosmic questions.

Really? This is good to know. I didn't notice too much interest in the 4 door cars from some passengers! Maybe they are an acquired taste. ;)

Yes, the Aston would be good. I mentioned the DB9 to Tim from MOTOR and he thought it would be just about ideal for this kind of run. He enthused about the exhaust noise as the baffles open.

Haha, the teasing of the M5's was all in good fun.

I admit I prefered to spend time in the Italian cars but have to say I quite enjoyed the time in Tony's M5 on Monday at 300+.

Also, after getting to drive Peter's Hartge beast I was quite impressed....makes an ideal everyday family car.
