that last picture almost looks like a photshop the firemen look huge compared to the car maybe its just because the tires are melted and the car is a lot lower
D'oh, I thought that looked like 17 mile drive even before I read it. I'm assuming that's a coupe'. Glad I carry a fire extinguisher even with a newer car
Not a rental...it was the Driver Experience thing touring the country.. Probably on lease though...some of the early 360 Challenge cars had that failure racing at Indy, it does dump a lot of hot oil quickly into the engine compartment..... That's a shame though ...I don't know that a fire extinguisher would put that out...you'd need more than one, I'd bet... I'll save that pic for when I think I'M having a tough day..... At least no Czech model/hostesses are involved...
Hi All. I was on the drive. The person in pic number 2 is Karen, my wife. It was very surreal. We were actually scheduled to drive the 430 next. We were in the front pace car driven by Didier Theys. He looked in his mirror and said, "Uh oh, where is everybody." We pulled over and waited. I joked that "I hope the guy driving the Ferrari did not wreck it or I'll be BUMMED". Then Didiers cell rang and he said "The Ferrari is on fire". We turned around and went back a mile to be greeted by traffic stopped in both directions and a cloud of black smoke. The right rear was ablaze. In about 10 minutes the car absolutely burned to the ground. The horn shorted out and started blaring, then the gas tank popped, and then the tires exploded one by one. Then the glass shattered. By the time the fire department arrived, they were just making sure the trees did not go up. Check your oil filter and oil lines guys! I'll comment on the event after I have spoken to the organizers about some issues.
No, I think it was just a point and shoot camera with a wide angle lens, and the edges get distorted. Wow, what a bummer. Glad nobody got hurt!
This is why they have the fire extinguisher option. (it would be standard but they sell more cars this way!)
The quality of the images suggest otherwise -- I'm thinking it was a digital SLR. The scale looks accurate ... remember in the description that the car burned down to 18". This is probably an exaggeration, but even so, the car's height will be significantly reduced. I agree with Andrew .. the lady in pic#2 has totally got her hands on her head going OH MY GOD NO!
It will be on Ebay next week, mint condition never wrecked which is true in a way. Italians have a knack for making sports cars that experience spontaneous combution phenomina, at least no one was hurt in this one. Doors left open passengers must have done a fast exit.
???????? I was driving at Indy in the 360 Ferrari Challenge in 2000 and 2001...We didn't have any problems like that at all. You might be confusing that with the Homestead Endurance race in December 2000 where multiple 360 did burn to the ground..and the race was cancelled. The problem there was the method of filling the cars up. There were a couple other times 360s did burn up. One was Montreal 2001 and Watkins Glen 2001. I didn't drive 2002 onwards...do you mean then??
Relax, alright? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.
As I said, the lady in pic two is Karen, my wife, and she was just shielding her eyes from the sun. She was actually saying "Wow, there's something you don't see everyday!" Now the girl who was a passenger IN the car looked a wee bit shook up..... And yes they got out pretty quickly. The gent behind them was in a 997tt. He saw the flames before they did, and almost skidded off the road as he pulled over because of the spilt oil. I've got some pics from the other side of the road I can post if anyone's interested.
