I am trying to work on my "new" '78 308. I try to research jobs here at F-chat beforehand and I take notes as I go. I am a bit surprised by the picture below. You are looking at the thermostat housing. Is the blue circled bolt the bleed screw (I was led to believe it was a brass screw and not a bolt)?

Also what is the red the circled device which has a broken hose? Part of this apparatus connects to the bottom / intake manifold part of the carbs.

I entered into this area because of a coolant leak from the hose leaving the thermostat housing. In general I thought my fuel hoses were in pretty good shape until I got here. I now see a combination of new and old hoses and some plugged and non-terminating hoses -- yikes.

    Thanks,
    Seamus

Yes Blue circle is a brass bleeder bolt.
Red circle sorry not sure but someone here should be able to identify that.

If you have a manual you can see a diagram of it. It is part of the fume recapture system. All the carbs connect back together too one line which goes to a charcoal canister on the passenger side rear so gas fumes do not escape and "harm the environment".

I think you can DL the owners manual at ferrari.owners site.

It's useless. Unless you're going for concours I'd say take it off.

Watch out with the bleed bolt...it does not have a hole in it...so it is an all or nothing proposition to use it. Verell makes a good point to drill it in a drill press so it will work like a traditional bleed screw.

Meaning through the threaded shank of the bolt, not down through the head =)

Yes, I may be daft but not that to that extent :).

Though I am wondering why test pipes cost so much.

Didn't mean that personally in any way!

Just thought there needed to be more clarification.

Does the therm bleed bolt have to be made of brass?

My thought would be that it should be some sort of alloy that is not prone to corrosion when in contact with H20/coolant mix.

Most bleed screws are brass or the like
