I was thinking that a more retro look would be cool in the 328, especially with the coal black interior I have on mine. Has anyone ever stripped the black paint from the instrument panel?

What about taking the panel (once it's out) and bringing it to a metal fab shop where they could make you a new one (copy) out of alum, stainless, anything you wanted?

I've switched all my stock small gauges over to VDO and this winter I plan on installing out the tach & spedo as well. Problem is that the new gauges are smaller diameter than the OEm, so I'll have to get a new plate made and thus my thought is to go to a fab shop.

    Short story made long, no...=)

See my step-by-step pictures of this work on: http://groups.msn.com/ferrari308gtsi

Start on Page 5 and then on to Page 6 for all of the pics. (click on the thumbnails to enlarge and to see the captions)

Scott - No need to swap the tach and speedo for VDO ones - simply have the OEM Veglia units 're-needled' as shown on Page 6 of the website above!

Dave, did you just sand the paint off, or use a chemical stripper, or ??

Your final look is very similar to what I want to achieve

That metal plate is black anodized (sp?) not simply painted. Will that sand off easily?

I took the easy way out - I simply purchased a new fascia from an early silver-fascia carb car, storing the OEM black fascia safely away should I ever have a change of heart ( ... but I doubt that I ever will - I really like the resulting look!)

I have an extra silver one here at home. I just needed it to act as a template.

I went the lazy way too. :) Changed the face plate.

I thought about sanding down the original and painting it, but i knew i would screw it up and wouldn't be a good idea.

IMHO it breaks up the color, with all that black, and looks cool too.

I would just change the face, but the 328 and 308 have different layouts.

Guess I'm back to having a custom face made.

That looks terrific - especially with the Prototipo. Much classier.

    Tillman,
That looks incredible. I am thinking the same thing to break up all of the black, starting with the wheel. Does the Prototipo require a special adapter or hub, easy to install, and where did you get it?

    Thanks.

    Tillman,
let's put it this way... I prefer the way it was before. It is nice, but IMHO black is the way to be.
The important thing is that it is OK for you.

    Ciao
    Eugenio

Not keen on it either. I don't think the orange dials work with the bare metal as well as they do with black. Still, its his car, as long as he's happy!

I like it in bare aluminum. Granted, I would have clear-coated the Al before reinstalling everything. Then again, I drive a carbed 308GTB with a silver instrument panel (with blue gauge needles).
