My wife and I are thinking about a trip to one of these islands. Has anyone been there to offer up some advise as to which is the better destination? Looking for nice beaches, friendly natives, shopping, a little history/culture and some nightlife (not like Cancun, but at least some people that stay up past sunset). Thanks, Jerry.

Between those two islands, Barbados by a large margin. The Dutch ABC islands really lack in culture IMHO...and are arid...whereas Barbados has a rich British history and culture with rain forest to explore as well as wonderful beaches...that being said, I would go to the BVIs instead...Virgin Gorda and Jost van Dyke are the two best islands in the Caribbean IMHO...beautiful water and beaches, friendly locals, great diving and easy to get to...we always fly into St. Thomas and then take a water taxi or ferry over to the BVIs...http://www.britishvirginislands.com/..., if you want a little more romance and French culture, try St. Barths... http://www.st-barths.com/ ...I've been to both twice this year already and will spend New Years 2007 at Foxys on Jost as I have the last two New Years...whatever you do, stay away from Cancun...is has no culture of its own and has taken on a fast food mentality like Florida...

Barbados has more going on but by far no Cancun. It is a pretty calm environment. The island is hilly and pretty. Snorkeling here is good and this is the place I went to get me to start diving. Food is expensive and so are drinks. Curacao is very calm and I didn't see any nite life at all and this is the place where people do go to bed at 9. It is flat. There is a nude beach there.

My parens complained the locals were so "relaxed" as to seem retarded. The service had the pace of a steaming glacier. And that was at an exclusive resort.

i prefer barbados over curacao. great golf. lots of shopping. an english mindset to the people. lush interior. beautiful and diverse beaches. curacao is more industrial, although rather quaint. stark enviroment though. lots of rocks and catcus. i do like bonaire for diving.

Unless you are hoping to find beautiful tropical rain forests and West Indies culture... but,if you want catus and scrub brush ... no mountains or tropical vegatation along with an Americanized quasi-Dutch culture with casinos, the the ABCs are for you...just not me...
