Looking through the stickies, the only info I found on relays for turn signal was to buy "an early BMW 5 Series" at Pep Boys. I went to Pep Boys (and Kragen) and all they have are universal turn signal relays, nothing proprietary to any specific car. So, I ask, do I go to a BMW dealer and get this "cross-ref" part or will one of these "universal" relays work (assume proper voltage, etc.)?

And the piece I'm talking about is the long cylindrical thing that is fastened within the relay area. My signals don't work, the fuse is fine, but I can feel this relay (if that's what it techically is) clicking inside when I turn on the blinker.

    Thnx

    What year 308?

If you're talking about an older 308 with the 2-terminal Flasher, any 2-terminal Flasher will be OK (as long as the max power rating is about the same); however, you might need to move the female terminals around in your relay panel a bit (IIRC, the stock Flasher has the two terminals in positions 90 deg to each other; whereas, some Flashers have the two terminals in positions parallel to each other). I like this "extra loud" type:

    http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10101/s-10101/p-100000163424/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000163424/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000163424

But your first test should be -- with the key "on" and the turn signal "on", short the two wires going to the Flasher together:

If the exterior turn signal lights for that side come "on" (solid), your Flasher is probably toast.

If the exterior turn signal lights for that side don't come "on" (solid), the problem is elsewhere.

    Good hunting...

Thnx! My car is 76 but it has a three terminal post. Looks like the JC Whitney photo. And when you say my "Flasher" is toast, are we talking about the relay or something new and different that may also be bad?

Even though the Flasher itself has 3 terminals, are there 3 wires connected to it or only 2 wires?

By "toast", I mean that the switch contacts inside the Flasher must be bad because the lights don't flash (even though the Flasher seems to be "clicking").

Try NAPA EP-36. It worked on my 1979 308 GTB.

On my 84 308 QV the turn signal and the hazard share the same relay. Is it the same for the older model as well?

I have an 84 308. The blinkers were giving me problems last year. Periodically not working. This year I found that the relay was buzzing when I would use the tun signal. Last month, it really starts buzzing. I took it out and then nothing. I think I can hear parts rattling around inside the old relay. I went to NAPA and a guy looked at my relay and gave me a relay that he thought might work. I put it in and it just buzzes one monotone buzz. I then went to autozone and they had a part that looked identical. The numbers on the relay were identical. I put it in and the same buzz. A guy I know suggested that only a Bosch relay will work. Someone else suggested that it may be a fuse. ( I don't think it is a fuse because I heard the relay buzzing and you could hear it struggling before it broke completely.) My question is: will only a specific relay work???????

There are car by car differences...for example the 1975-1977 308 had hazard flashers separate from the turn signal flashers.

A generic flasher should work but you can look behind the relay panel to see if the wires in the socket go to the flasher contacts (there are extra unused contacts on the fuse panel flasher socket).

Generally a monotone buzz or high click rate means you have a short. The flasher relay is alerting you to the fact. However, shorts are normally associated with either right or left but not both. Do you have the buzz with hazards and turn both left and right indicators?

I had the same problem. I went to Pep Boys, asked for an "early 1980's BMW 5 series unit", they gave me one for a 1982 BMW. It fit & worked perfectly. Cost was like $11. Try it again.
