I would like to start a thread here that polls members on this board who have actually had a belt break on their Fcar.

There has been sooooo many posts on when to do a major service, and the hazards if you do not, but I have never seen any stats anywhere which shows how many cars have actually had a major problem or engine blow-up/failure due to not changing the belts.

Is this fact or fiction, lets settle it now. Please, anyone who has had a broken belt please let us know, and let us know how long it had been between Major Service's, as well as the associated cost to bring the car back to standard.

Here's several hundred prior posts on this subject to get ya started.

FWIW, I spoke with my (very well respected) mechanic yesterday and told him I had 6 years and 40,000 miles on my belts and asked when I should bring it in. He said that it was fine and to not worry about it anytime soon.

Might give the old search function a try.

Attempts to get to the bottom have been tried more times than people find a picture of a wood F50. And quite a few first person reports of belt breakage.

Trust me it ain't a wives tale, or don't trust me, I don't care. I make way more on wrecked motors than I do on timing belts.

Rifledriver is correct, it's simple math.....about $1K for peace of mind vs. $12K for a new engine..

6-7 years max on t belts providing mileage is under 30k, its mostly a time interval vs mileage on these cars.

Anything can happen though each time you start the motor on one of these cars, you can ask yourself:

    Do ya feel lucky?

    Well do ya?

Seems in all this excitement I lost count how many years its been since I changed my belts.

    I gots to know

Then crank it up go for a ride and hit the redline a few times

You can worry about belts, or you can worry about sodium valves........or you can worry about who your gf is banging at lunchtime......

    Or you can just drive..........

Easily believable. It was $20,000 for a full 355 motor rebuild that had no damage.

Play it safe, and just do the recommended maintenance. Changing belts with just 30k miles seems pretty absurd compared to "normal" cars, but better safe than sorry.

Boys boys boys I thought subject was t-belts not doin the chicks, hahaha. Jon if you do nothin' else while you own your ferrari, listen to Brian. He is always to the point and calls it like he sees it. The factory used to recommend 5 yrs on belts but has now modified that to 3 years. I personally have down mine on the 5 yr. plan because my cars have always been driven somewhat regularly.
I think some told me one time that brian was so busy rebuilding broken motors that he now lives in Beverly Hills! Just yankin' your chain Brian.
Hey bubba who's the chick in your avatar? Regards, Vern

    Where ya been?

Funny ain't it. From 1974 to 2005, 31 years Ferrari used timing belts. Been telling us all along when to change them. Been revising that figure based on experience just as they should and some people still don't believe them.

    That's ok, read my signature.

But what really gets me is some people still, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary still don't think they break.

Ferrari quit using them and some people still have not gotten the message.

The auto industry as a whole is abandoning them because they all want to stretch service intervals.

Must think all the stories and first person accounts are a grand conspiracy by the auto mechanics of the world.

Well some people think Elvis is still alive.

    Exactly.

I understand those who feel if they can cheat the averages long enough they can pay for a motor that goes pop. But for me and my clients I have no use for a car in the garage that I cannot at a moments notice jump in and drive to New York AND back.

If I can't have that kind of confidence color it gone.

Even my Volvo 740 turbo wagon required routene belt changes,

I was afraid when my wife blew the engine it was due to a broken belt and the warrenty wouldn't cover it. Fortunatly she just broke a rod splitting the block in half, braking the starter off the bell housing cutting large holes in the oil pan and the warrenty covered the repairs, that included a replacement short block, starter, bell housing and pan. Because the failure wasn't maintenace related. Cost more to fix than I felt the car was worth

Sounds like an OSCA I know. After a heat race the owner complained it would not start. Upon inspection the starter was found hanging by the cable because the rod blew the starter right off the side.

A week or 2 ago. The car crashed, landed on its top and burned.

Probably too injured to get out, but the door design sure wasn't going to allow it.
