My Enzo is Home and Good as New

    Here is a follow up of my Enzo after mating with a spool of Romex house wiring:
    The car is back, looks and seems to function better than new. That is the good news. All is well that ends well.

    The Journey:
    The Enzo is a modular car. We have seen how well it can be punished with the central passenger “tub” surviving. Everything else is basically a bolt on. This is good. With other cars the frame is usually bent. It is then bent back, re-welded or glued back together, then sent back on the road. But it is never quite as good as new.

    With the Enzo, the outermost body parts are held on by (relatively) weak brackets. For example the bumper is held on this way. These struts are bolted onto slightly stronger frame elements. And these are eventually bolted to the tub. It is as an accordion. This is a safety feature for the driver and a safety feature to protect the innermost parts.

    Unlike most cars that need to go to the body shop, the Enzo can be repaired by removing injured parts and then bolting on new ones. Yes, this is an over simplification but the principal is correct. The advantage is that one does not try to bend things to the proper shape but get a new part instead.

    I found it interesting that every bolt had to be specified and replaced by the original Ferrari part. Each connection has a certain strength bolt that is designed with a break away in mind. You cannot just go to NAPA and use a generic piece of hardware.

    There were two major delays.
    The first is that FNA carries common parts such as the bumpers but in this case had no fender. It had to be manufactured OEM in Italy. That only took 3 months to get. I was lucky it did not take longer.
    The other major delay was in the paint shop. Apparently there are only 4 Ferrari trained shops in the US - we used First Class in Pompano, just north of Shelton. The car had to sit there for a while, then they started but ran out of paint. They then told me their supplier was out as well. You just have to laugh at this point. Add 2 months for the paint and body shop. They did have to do the final shimming and alignment of the body panel/bumper/underpinnings, so this takes time and the result was nearly perfect. That is not always the case with cars right out of the factory.

    Now add a few weeks to get the insurance adjuster out there in the first place. Then add a few more weeks to get the final review of work, and the paperwork through the insurance company. Then there is the hierarchy that has to approve the payment. After the check finally arrives your car will be released. Add still one more week because of your busy schedule to take the car back. Now you have 6 months time.

    The last Enzo Shelton repaired, although worse off, took 13 months to complete. Of that only a month was taken up by the paint shop.

    I have not had an automotive/repair experience as this in my life (knock on wood) and hope to be lucky and bypass any additional experience in the future. It was a good learning experience for me. I look at experiences this way as my mother always told me to look only at the good things as they happen. I learned about major car repairs, insurance companies, paint shops, and work schedules at a minimum.

    They are talking about the repair costs of an FXX on the Racing forum. I had to laugh/cry because it looks as if work is needed in all 4 quarters and several tens of thousands was mentioned as a possible cost to repair things. I can tell you this about the Enzo:
    A bumper will set you back about $18,000. A right front fender, another $31,000. That does not include the labor to remove the old one and put on the new one. Nor does it including the paint job, brackets, or hardware. A headlight will set you back almost $7,000. You have to remember that Ferrari parts are not mass produced and are not availible at the NAPA store.

    $31k for a fender? That sounds like a price you could pay to a prototype shop to make a one off fender to any spec you desired. Thanks for doing your part to support the F1 team. :D :D :D



    (I am glad that you got the car back, sorry it took so long but it sounds like they did a fantastic job)

    glad you have your car back. i do have a stupid question, didnt Napolis have most of the parts needed to fix your car from the P4/5 bieng built on an Enzo? perhaps the parts are year specific and his would not work? i mean no offense.

    at any rate, i wish you well. i had no idea the "super car" Ferrari parts were "THAT" hard to come by. - just to think, the cars are still "new"..... what happens in 20 years?

    Cheers for the car being repaired. I would imagine the damage might hurt the price if you were to sell the Enzo (hypothetically). If so, what would that put you back from retail?

    The car looks the same except on close inspection. Now there are no marks up front from being on the track from the original owner.

    Good to hear that you got your Enzo back on the road. I remember reading your post when you first got it and it was nice to see it wasn't going to be a garage queen. It's pretty humbling to know that the headlight on your car costs more than a few times the KBB value of mine :) Will we be seeing any new pix of the newly restored car?

    Hi Ali, I'm so glad to hear you got your car back and no one was hurt or anything in the initial mishap. I remember reading your other posts. There is an upside to this story. I have been into Ferrari's since 16 years old. I am 48 and got my first one last year. A Beautiful and incredible little perfect Carbed 79 308 GTB. My family and I took a trip to the Fla. Keys this past summer and Benn Correale at Shelton was kind enough to invite us to take a tour of the dealer and took us into the inner sanctum of the repair shops. I have seen most Ferrari's in person but had never seen an Enzo. When we walked into the shop my 12 year old F-Car nut son and I almost passed out to see apparently your amazing looking machine. We looked it over thoroughly careful not to touch and the thing is a technological masterpiece. It was especially nice because it was in some kind of lift that left it a few feet off the ground and not only could you look into it but you could also see the entire undercarriage. That thing is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. And although it is very "form fallows function" in design I still find it incredibly beautiful. There is another thread on here about the Enzo and Jim's P4/5 and lots of people have said they don't find the looks appealing. I and my son found it to be one of the greatest looking engineering masterpieces I have ever seen.
    Sorry to ramble , but to make a long story short, thanks to your terrible misfortune, my family and I were able to experience close-up this amazing car. Neither Pininfarina nor Ken the ex-designer have anything to apologize for. This thing is brilliant.
    Again I'm sorry this whole thing happened to you and I'm in awe of the way you handled it , at least on this board. I love these things like people and cringe when I see a rock chip on one.I don't know if I could of handled the wreck, let alone the repair process. Congratulations on the return to the streets. Very glad to see that you drive yours alot. That's what they're ment for. Bob

    That was an interesting read. Thanks! I wasn't aware that you purchased an Enzo! I have to say congratulations :) You also got one in my favorite color for the Enzo...yellow! Have you posted any pictures/reviews/etc. anywhere else? I'm guessing you purchased the one that was crashed in Florida in the past year.

    I changed the oil already. I needed to buy a 19mm Allen socket. I wonder why Ferrari has such a gigantic drain plug. Anyway, I put in Castrol European Formula 0W-30. It is almost as thick as a 40 wt. oil. The HTHS at 150 degrees C is > 3.5. I know this is safe as I just got an oil analysis back from my neighbor's Enzo.
    His 10W-60 wt. Shell oil only has a viscosity of a 40 wt. oil. The oil has sheared down quite a bit after only 1,400 miles of easy, non race track driving. I tested the 5W-40 Helix Ultra of the Maranello and it sheared down to a mid 30 wt. oil after only 1,800 miles. These Shell oils thin quickly it seems.
    The pressure / temperature relationships with the 30 wt. oil now in my Enzo are appropriate for around town driving. I might use a thicker oil if I was going to race the car but I am not planning on that.

    This makes me feel a lot more comfortable for having Chubb insure my own car. I'd hate to see all the hassles you'd have to go through with someone like State Farm or Allstate. Hope to see your car at some local FL shows!
