    I'm about 3 weeks from finishing a kitchen re-do.

I have a friend who was the 'official" general contractor on the job, although he spent very little time on it, knowing that I would be doing a lot of it myself.

The subs for the most part were paid directly by me so the time and money he had tied up in it was not really big.

He called the other morning and said the bill to date for the materials, some subs etc is less than $15k. So far I have spent about $60,000 on the project so the whole thing will come in at about $80k.

I think he is NOT going to charge me a fee ( I could be wrong), so I need to get him a nice gift.

He works A LOT, so he really doesn't have a lot of hobbies. He does have a Yamaha "Road Star" or something like that which is a big cruiser motorcycle.

He did mention that once he get the current 4 houses tied up he wants to take a 2 month motorcycle trip out west. Don't know if thats a pipe dream or real.

So, I need help with deciding what kind of gift and how much to spend.

BTW, and not really pertinent, about 10 years ago he mentioned that he wanted a .44mag revolver, so I gave him my Colt Anaconda; not as a reward etc, simply as a gift to a friend.

Give him a gas card for his trip. If ya really like him offer to ride out west with him. Your retired, and your hunny-do list looks like it just got a lot shorter.

Perhaps a plasma TV would be a nice gift. It doesn't have to be the largest or the most expensive but perhaps it would be a nice "extra" for the office or bedroom ... something he might not do for himself.

    Uro,

You seem to be a bike ridin' kind of guy. How about going on the trip with him? - if you think that's really appropriate. You can buy him dinners, regale him with interesting stories, and generally be fun to hang with. You can show your appreciation for the job, and give yourself a little "retiring from retirement" gift at the same time.

Good idea, and you can get an LCD or rear projection HDTV for substantially less than a plasma. I think about 2 grand (or less for rear projection) for a 42 - 46", which is a nice size.

I just happened to find myself here. I can quit anytime I want, really...

If he put the money on Ferraris in the garage instead of the kitchen, the garage is where he would be sleeping.............

that's one of the big questions. That's why I mentioned the cost of the project.

A $100 gas card would not be right. On the other hand, I think 10% of the project cost would be too much, i.e. $8000.

I was thinking in the $2000-3000 range. What do you think??

I'm going back into practice, but in a different situation.

I'm joining the guy in the next town over; I'll do no bookkeeping, no payroll, no business work at all. I'll simply see patients and operate. This situation will eliminate a lot of the previous head aches.

BTW, he's an interesting guy; has spent silly money restoring an Alfa GTV!

    That's a nice idea.

I guess I'd have to discuss it with him first. Can't imagine just buying one on a random date would work. So, no element of surprise, but it is in the price range I thought of, and might be up his alley.
