My new F430 will arrive in about 1-2 weeks. I'm considering flying to the dealer to take delivery and then driving it 600 miles back to home. I want to break it in asap and figured that the 600 miles (driven correctly) would help. The dealer will be installing the 3M film prior to my drive. Does anyone see anything wrong with the drive?
    Thanks

Sounds like a blast -- just as long as you vary the rpms frequently while on the highway.

From my understanding of break in procedures. Suggest taking some back roads. On and off the power is important to help seat the rings. It helps to accelerate hard occassionally. Also suggest periodic stops along the way to let everything cool off and heat cycle. Engine and transmission. Everything runs very hot when new. Lots more friction than when all is broken in. Just my opinion but hope it helps.

It is a great car. Lots..... of power.

Break-in is completely unnecessary in a modern Ferrari. The engines have been exercised thoroughly on the bench before going into the car. Do it if it makes you feel better, because it won't do any harm ...

do it then it will be out of your system and the car can sit there for a while without you trying to live in it . i went 1100 miles non-stop , got it out of my system and then was ready to off load it :D

IMO this is wasted mileage. I'd just have them ship it that way you can put quality miles on it at your leasure. They don't really require any break in anyway. I know it's stupid but these things become more undesirable the more mileage so why waste 600 if you don't have to. It's your car though :)

I agree with SrfCity. It's wasted mileage. I have more fun using these 600 miles on daily drives. But it is your car.

I did that many many years ago when I took delivery of my new Countach. Drove from NJ to FL.

Very stressful & also had AC problems most of the way.

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't. Just my 2 cents.

Not a single mile I've driven in the F430 could EVER be considered wasted. The car is awesome -- enjoy every single minute you can with it and drive, drive, drive!

Wasted mileage??? Why waste your money on a Ferrari if you don't plan on driving it! Money spent on cars (doesn't matter what make or model) is for pleasure.

I just picked my car up from Steve Harris Imports (Salt Lake City) and drove it 530 miles home. I enjoyed the drive and the experience of taking delivery of my new Ferrari from the dealer. Within the first 4 days of owning the car I now have put over 1,000 miles on the F430.

Life is short! Enjoy it like there is no tomorrow.

"wasted mileage" is any mile when you're not ENJOYING it. If you can enjoy driving straight 1000 miles on the freeway without any stops, go for it! No one here would criticise you for it. But driving 600 miles because you feel like you "have to" is not necessary. If you know you can have fun doing it, knock yourself out ... but realize that the car is not going to magically benefit in any way....

I do intend to drive this car! On the track, to dinner, to the store and wherever else I can think of. I'm not afraid of the miles. Ever since I did stupid thing and totalled my GT3, i've had a different outlook. I have that car for around 1.5 years, and even though I put about 25 track hours on it, it only had 4,500 miles on it BECAUSE i had been concerned about putting too many miles on it and lowering its resale value. My attitude now...ENJOY YOUR CAR, DRIVE IT THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE DRIVEN and don't let your resale worries effect your descisions.

I've run into the same type scenarios in my condo. Do I redo the the place the way I WANT TO LIVE IN IT, or do i only make the changes that I feel most buyers would want to see? You can guess which way I went. I have 7 rooms in my house (one being a powder room and one being a closet); I have 5 flat screen plasmas and 4 additional flat screen LCD computer monitors in a 2,000 sq foot condo!

Back to the original question. I'm aware some will frown on the extra mileage. I just wanted to know if this would be a bad break-in procedure. So far as the engines already being broken in; I'm not sure I buy that. If that's true, why is it that cars (I know this concerning Porsches for a fact) pick up extra horsepower once they get a few hundred, and in some case a few thousand miles on them?

It is well-known and documented that all Ferrari engines undergo a full shake-down test that is extensive on the bench.

The reason that the engines gain a little power is that they're "tight" when new, and therefore have higher friction for each cycle.

Your car will probably get increases in power fo 10 or 20 thousand miles. I dont think you want to follow a break in procedure that long. The motors all get about 4 or 5 dyno hours with a computer at the controls. That includes some time at very high RPM and a max power run. Then it is installed with new oil. Then a factory test driver drives the cr*p out of it for 1/2 hour or more. Its pretty broken in before you turn the key.

Wasted miles. Nothing in any Ferrari is wasted. My 12 year old son and I flew from Maryland to Houston TX to drive my first Ferrari, a 1979 308 GTB 2000 miles home in 3 days.. It was the finest time I have spent in my car, not to mention the unforgettable time with my son. I say go for it. Hell I'll fly out and drive it back for you in one day.-Bob

I cannot believe the comment about "wasted mileage".
These cars should be driven! Anywhere, anytime, anyhow, for any reason. I drive mine to the store, to the office, to golf and anywhere else I need to go.
Newsflash - a Ferrari is a car. Especially new Ferraris - they are competent, well sorted out cars. They don't need breaking in, they need to be driven all the time.
I have never understood the point of spending all that money on a Ferrari and being terrified to put mileage on it. New Ferraris depreciate like any other car. The appreciation cycle will take 40 years or so, so you may as well use the car. If you're concerned with mileage depreciation you should probably buy a Kia or a Saturn and save the difference in a secure bank, earning 2% per year.
I say take delivery of the car, and take the really long way home. Find a 1,000 mile route to drive, on back roads where you can have fun with it.

Wasted mileage??? Give me a break... IT'S A CAR, DRIVE IT! If you want an inanimate object to look at, go to an art gallery and buy a sculpture.

FYI, these are the same guys that'll tell you, "sorry, the mileage is too high" when it comes time to sell a car with higher miles. It's a fact that most buyers will opt for a lower mileage car over high. And, trust me there will be plenty of lower mile cars to choose from. But hey, it's your dough and car :)

My owner's manual for my 430 states" Avoid exceeding 5000 rpm during the first 1000 km(620 miles)" A nice 600 road trip would accomplish this.
It is not easy staying below 5000 rpm either. Enjoy.
