working on it... contacted shipper and federalizing importer.. think 3-4k to ship, 6-8k to federalize. 2.5% of purchase price in duty think 0 warranty,
I also am curious as to exactly the whole process tould work. Isn't there something like a 2.5% (of purchase price) charge when you import a car into the country or does that not apply? If we could get someone who has done this to give a breakdown on shipping cost, federalization steps aswell as an overall timeframe it would be much appreciated. That CLK-DTM is not too shabby
It will cost far more than $3K-$4K to ship that car to the US, and most who have had cars federalized spent $20K-$30K. Now it could be that the 430 series has more OEM equipment that need not be added during the process here which could result in a lower cost. However, that's only speculation on my part. My car was shipped by container from Saudi in November, 2005, to the Baltimore area ports. It took 2 months and was around, I believe, $9,000.00. I could reconfirm that if necessary. It was a US version that had been sold originally by FoW. It was air freighted to Saudi by the original owner on a 747 three years ago at a cost of $20,000.00! As to Federalization, you can check with: Mr. Richard Fritz Amerispec Corporation 190 George Washington Hwy. Ridgefield, CT 06877 V 203-744-0844 F 203-743-9771 There is also another in the LA area, but I do not have that info. It's not always an easy deal. As to California certification, see SkidKid. He did a great dissertation here recently in the 360 section as to his success.
Later tonight or tomorrow morning, I will post contact information for JK Tehnologies in Baltimore. They are a registered importer and do a lot of legalization work. From what I can tell they do a good job. They can probably give you a few clues about other costs as well. I think the $9k number for shipping is probably about right. Working from memory but as I recall when my car came over in 01 the shipping was $6500. It wouldn't surprise me if it went up a little since then.
You pay import duty to the US Gov through customs for the value of the vehicle as it enters the country. Duty has nothing to do with Federalization charges. The rate at this point I do not know.
Try this site: http://www.importexporthelp.com/importing-cars.htm It provides some basic overview information. You will end up paying 2.5% import tax plus you will likely have to pay gas guzzler tax. Bringing a car from Dubai may be an interesting exercise. If you can get a US spec car, you may be able to get through for very low cost. Otherwise, you could end up with a big bill. I will do a little more research and post my results. Also: J.K. TECHNOLOGIES 3500 SWEET AIR ST BALTIMORE, MD 21211 Phone 410-366-6332 Fax 410-366-7655
John, Was yours a US spec Car? Didn't you say about $20K of work was done to it? Did you get the spacers? BTW, the site you listed is not a gov. site so be careful. I have a link somewhere I'll try to find. Ok, I believe this is the link with additional links within: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/graymarket_RI_list01092006.html
Can we get an idea on the asking price of a few of the F430s? Is the only way to tell the difference between US and Euro spec by checking the VINs?
i can provide some prices for the F430's here if you want, as for the US and Euro difference, the simplest way to notice is, the orange signal lights on the front bumper on the US spec version, the euro doesnt have it, it has only a small ball shaped light under the ferrari logo and the euro has "LC" button, not available on the US version Image Unavailable, Please Login
And theres only 1 out of the 7 430s shown on that site that you could drive without burning out your retinas! So if you're seriously considering buying one of those monstrosities, don't forget to add $30,000 to change the seats, dash and steering wheel!
Well just for the record I would be interested in any information that anybody comes up with. If they don't want to put it in a thread feel free to PM me. To me it seems that it would at least be a worthwhile exercise to find out the approx. price, timeframe and hassle factor that is involved in such an endeavor.
Greg, Yes I got the spacers. Thank you. I know it isn't a goverment site. I looked at several gov sites too and the info was the same so I posted where the info was more accessable. I can provide links to the gov sites if anyone wants them. No, my car was not US spec. I believe my car was delivered to Spain. It was legalized by JK Technologies and I did the CA certification. I believe the conversion cost about $20k. I have a complete list of all parts that were changed. I can post if anyone is interested.
Got this from one of the accepted federalizing shops. Sorry about the miss price earlier. Never trust the Internet.... "We do not accept any gulf spec vehicles. Euro spec is fine, but must be verified by VIN. Base price is $10,000 plus needed parts and labor." AAA Sunshine Car Import Inc. 4206 Fowler St. Ft. Myers, FL 33901 Tel: (239)278-1020 Fax: (239)278-3700
Do we have any idea what parts and labor for a 360 might be vs. a 430? Would a 430 have less parts since it is newer or are they pretty similar?
If you are buying a US spec car...there is no federalization. It already meets our laws. For the last word call long time Ferrari clu guy and DOT official, Dick Merritt.
There is no such thing as "Gulf spec". All Ferraris sold in the Gulf are Euro spec cars (with a 'B' in their VIN) except in Dubai, where you have US spec cars (with an 'A' in their VIN). So I highly doubt that whoever said the statement above knows what they're talking about.
Great! The person contacted is on the rather short list of people "approved" by the DOT to do these conversions. So, I suspect they do know what they are taking about but rather, since they didn't know what a "Gulf" spec car was, they added that clause. So lets just focus on the $10k in conversion cost +part/labor, and not on the superfluous info. Euro spec, then its: 1) $10k in conversion cost +part/labor, and not on the superfluous info. 2) Shipping 3) 2.5% of purchase price If find one that is US spec, then its: 1) Shipping 2) 2.5% of purchase price Anything else? Seems like the obvious
Nothing else jumps out at me but I still feel like there is something missing. Otherwise I might have to take a long trip to visit Dubai myself!
I suspect that you still need to do the certification tests and get DOT documents. You may want to use an importer to do this since they know the in's and out's. When I did CA certification the testing cost me $3500. That is just the test and doesn't include any parts or work. I would assume that I could get the EPA cert at the same time. I would guess that the $10k includes the paperwork and the certification tests. NOTE: If you have to do certification test be sure to get 50 state certified. Otherwise you limit your market by excluding CA.
Local dealer sells tons of US spec cars here into the US. As noted previously, assuming its a US car, total cost is shipping plus the 2.5% import duty. As far as warranty is concerned, it too is valid in the U.S., but it comes into effect one year after the car has been titled.
How did you get the dealer to honor the warranty? Did you have to call Ferrari Italy to arrange a reimbursement arrangement? Thanks for your help. JP
I'm in Dubai right now and want to shop for a 430 spider, where do I go? I'm only here for a couple more days, so I'd like to visit a dealer ASAP. thanks, Noel
