See page 85 in the 176/79 OM or page 77 in the 250/82 OM to confirm this and the cylinder numbering.

If it runs smoothly on just one bank (when you try different firing orders), I'd say that you have no fuel supply to the bad bank -- i.e., if you have the firing order wrong -- and you must in some case(s) if you've tried different ones -- (and both banks have fuel and spark), it would be bucking/backfiring/generally doing horrible things.

plugs are wet . the cap seems to be marked in the opposite direction to the rotation of the ign rotor . cap says 1 8 4 12 2 9 6 11 3 7 5 10 i read that these caps may not be the orig. thats way i was hoping someone with a car could check and tell me 1 7 5 11 3 9 6 12 2 8 4 10 in a clockwize or counterclock rotation . seems this problem has been with owner a while . thanks for the quik response . cheers frank oh the firing order in the 3 manuals i have give the 1 7 5 11 etc order i also have no idea if year is important

Sorry for stating the obvious, but your second post makes the "trouble" more clear.

I checked the schematic at the back of the 176/79 OM, and the labels shown on the distributor cap actually match that 1-8-4-12-2-9-6-2-11-3-7-5-10 order. I'm just guessing but, I'd have to think that the error occurred in the text on page 85 (something just typed and was never corrected in later OMs) and that the schematic (something done by the Eng Dept and scanned) is correct.

great . can you see which way the rotor is spinning in the schematic . the rotor in the car turn s clockwise .could the cap be labeled in the opposite direction ? only a fiat lmao

The labeling on the schematic implies a CCW rotor rotation (to give that 1-8-4... order) if the view is taken from above (but this may not be the case) -- you need someone with another 400i to comment:

I read somewhere that the replacement caps for the 400i engines are the same cap as the 512BB except that the firing order is marked differently. It sounds like you may have a 512BB cap. I read this 15 years ago so forgive me if it is not quite correct.

ok here goes . 153624 is any 6 cyl f/o and the dist shaft does rotate clockwise . so 1 7 5 etc is the order . just plug 153624 into the wsm order the car will run on the 1 8 5 number but you have to install the wires in a counter clockwise order to make her run , i am not out of the woods yet with this car . cannot adjust fuel ixture car runs much better almost 100 percent . inteligent customer
