    Great attitude. These things really are works of art and it is a lot of fun admiring how Ferrari takes so much care with each and every part. They have always done so. If they can not buy an acceptable part for a certain function, there is never a second thought about designing a part that is just so.

    Your photography has taken another giant step. The lighting in the last series of pictures was right on. They are not "studio shots" but the detail is there for all to see. And to see the atmosphere of your shop. And to admire.

    Still waiting for pistons. But put the freeze plugs in. They were a bear, until I got the right tool. I started taking the gearbox apart, until there was another special socket I needed. Another call to GT parts. The body is moving slowly now. I was riding my bike yesterday and rode down to Symbolic service facilities in Sorrento Valley. What a treat, there were 2 of the 206 dino race cars. What a feast for the eyes.

    I also tried the Caswell cad plating kit again, with much better results. I'm trying to categorize all the hoses in the dino, size-material-length etc. unless someone has already done so. Mark, whom I met through this thread and lives close by brought his Maserati Merak to do a little work on so I have a little company. He has a 308 also. My little hobby shop is looking pretty good. Two Dino's, one Maserati and one Lamborghini Miura.

    Have you considered using red glyptol on the inside of the oil sump lids? It seems to stop some of the sweating these motors are typically know for. I put it on mine, baked them in an oven and my floor stays fairly oil drip free.

    Just a thought.

    Jon, This came from one of the Lambo forums.

    I've taken this post from another forum. It refers to engine/drivetrain castings but perhaps it will work on porous wheels.

    The loctite part # 17497 - 1 Litre loctite 990 IMPREGNATION SEALANT.

    A nice description I read was:

    "Years ago new castings were pressure tested for porosity prior to machine work was started. Porous castings were junked prior to machining. Today, porosities are repaired using Loctite 990 which is surface applied and cures at room temperatures. 990 can seal a porosity to the pressure rating of the parent metal. Factory castings are dipped and cured using Loctite Resinol wicking type porosity stop. One type cures at 194F degrees and one cures at room temperature. The porosities are rectified for a lifetime. Aluminum is the most prone to porosity."

    Glyptal is a trade name for an alkyd varnish. Traditionally used by hotrodders to seal castings and allow faster oil drainback to the pan. In this case "seal" means to keep inbedded casting sand, etc from coming loose, not seal from leaks. It leaves a very slick finish on the casting. I'm not sure about its use on aluminum though. For that, I'd use the Loctite.

    One final touch that was not done on the engine that was illustrated at the beginning of this article, was deburring and painting the inside of the block. I recommend it highly as it allows oil to flow back down to the pan more quickly. If also seals the interior block surface trapping any contaminants that might become loose. Do not use just any paint. Many engine builders use a product called GLYPTAL, which an electric motor insulating paint, originally developed by General Electric. Once dry and cured it leaves a very tough, slick coating.

    Eastwood sells the Glyptal product. The quart size is the best value over the spray can.

    As a Maserati Bora owner for over 18 years, I'm surprized you chose the Maserati Merak as the Bora is so affordable today. In 1972-74 The Dino was priced at $15k, new from the dealer while The Bora was priced at $25k. Today Bora's don't even fetch twice their original price unless they're spectacular while the Dino is multiples. In actual driving and reliability, The Bora is far more robust.

    BTW, want to buy one?

    I went over today to pick up parts that were out for polishing and chroming. I left them 4 weeks ago, and checked the other day and they said they would be done Friday. Unfortunately the plating company went up in flames Friday at 2:00 AM. Due to the cleanup the owners aren't allowed in the building until monday. It doesn't look good for all the parts that were there. I won't know till Monday for sure, but it is most likely I lost the following- Valve covers, Headlight rings, Air box cover, expansion tank and the worst, the chrome surround around the windshield and the chrome surround around the rear window. Hopefully I'll be able to find all the parts.

    That's devastating news...

    Insurance?

    FWIW... the valve covers shouldn't be polished anyway (plastic media blast), and the air box cover and expansion tank shouldn't be chromed (painted black).....

    I am sorry to hear that. I was over at Superformance in the UK a few months ago & they had several spare engines and lots of parts in their shop. I would call them and ask for Mike or Ron they are really helpful & straightforward to deal with. If I can be of help please let me know. Maybe after you see what is left you can send out an itemized list to all of us & we can try to help. You certainly have been a huge contributor here. Good Luck
