The F50 recently had a full Tubi system fitted from the manifolds back to the tailpipes by Phil Hughes. At the same time the engine bay was given a "birthday" and the clutch/thrust bearing was changed. Photos are variously Phil's and mine. As there are tons of photos, it will take some time to cover the whole job so I will probably post them as time allows over the next few days.

Tonight's installment- pulling it to bits

Thanks for these pics Scott. Im going to like this thread. Never will you see an F50 with its guts on display like the pics you are posting here. Very very cool. :) Did FF replace the rear main engine seal while it was apart? How much does an F50 clutch/thrust bearing cost these days? :p

The stock exhaust looks very restrictive too. Did you say you did before and after dyno sessions? :)

Yep, there's short video of dyno before and after. Stock exhaust is more ugly than restrictive... cats are restrictive though, of course.

Pap... you DON'T wanna know what hoops were jumped through to get a clutch for it... bottom line... got one MUCH quicker and MUCH cheaper than dealer could do it.

I can imagine that they would be a pain in the ass to get parts for in general, right? :)

Dont worry, I still always edit some posts too mate. Its hard to ask more than a few questions in 1 post, because they wont get answered. As you can see, FF replied to the clutch replacement being a pain to source the clutch kit and the ugly restrictive exhaust and dyno. But he or Scott havent replied to the changing of the rear main seal question that I asked. ;)
    Understand what I mean? :)

wow, interesting stuff allright! Glad FF knows what he's doing when he pulls the car apart:)
Just out of curiosity how long does it take to pull apart, and to put back together?

who said I know what I'm doing? as Peepee will tell you, I just make stuff up. ;)

No real answer to that question... but now that it's all ship shape, I reckon I could do a clutch on THIS one in about 12 hours.... it's all the age/deferred maintenance stuff that consumes the time.

Pap... you raise a good point... I DID change the rear main seal... and I just realised I forgot to charge it out!... Oh well... call it 3 laps at PI. ;)

12 hours eh? my camry took a whole day to take the clutch out cus its front wheel drive and they had to float the engine out.. not that you can compare a camry to a magnificent Ferrari F50, but 12 hours is a fair bit.
FF, besides 360C's car have you worked on any other F50's - theres supposedly around 6 in melb..

Much of the work is just removing the main floor/bodywork and refitting... it's as big as a house.

I have another one due in shortly, but the other ones I've worked on were in UK... one of them came here for Raftis in 2000.

Theres not 6 in Melbourne. I think 3.

Ok kiddies, a couple of points:

Please try and keep it reasonably on topic. If it degenerates into the usual fights/garbage, I really have better things to do than waste hours of time on this.

$$$$$$- Remember that this is a public website. I won't be commenting on costs for a whole host of reasons. Suffice to say, it looks expensive and it was. Phil's time spent and labour cost was perfectly reasonable.

I dont think anyone said it wasnt reasonable. Id say 12 hours is very reasonable for the amount of work performed. :)
And im sure FF would have looked after ya. ;)

Photo 1- may be difficult to make out in photo; but both wheelarches had bubbles/delamination where the standard mufflers came close to them. The F50 has massive heat buildup in the engine department and over the years it caused some problems. Both wheel arches also had discolouration in the lacquer from the heat.

Photo 2- wheelarches repaired and recleared. I had all the other carbon fibre bits relaqured at the same time as many were marked or scratched

Photo 3- not sure if this will show clearly. This is part of the airbox showing how scratched the lacquer was. Now was the time to deal with it as the wheelarches were being done anyway.

Photo 4- airbox after being relacquered

Photo 5- some DH had damaged the undertray by knocking the edge off with a jack, exposing the honeycomb web inside.

    Photo 6- repaired undertray

Photo 7- another photo of bubble in rear wheel arch caused by heat from standard muffler. There is so much heat in the engine bay that the F50 has electric fans in the undertray to suck the heat out. I am always careful to leave the engine cover open when I get out after a run to let as much heat out as possible

Photo 1- the airboxes are lined with foam, presumably for sound reduction. The heat and time had caused all this foam to tear away and fall to pieces, lodging in the air filters. Anyone with an old 308 will be familiar with this in the boot where it is used as a seal against the radiator.

Photo 2- fitted high flow air filters

Photo 3- re-laquered airboxes with high flow airfilters

Photos 4 & 5- more shots of airboxes with reminants of foam removed ready for re-lacquering and high flow filter fitment

Photo 6- another shot of refinished airbox
