GTR2 uses a new physics engine, so the low speed grip issues from GTR1 are gone. However, the handling at higher speed doesn't feel as 'tight' as GTR1. It feels like there is more grip now and is harder to lose control.

GTR1 used a modified version of the engine dating back to F1 Challenge '99-'02 (2003 release). The GTR2 engine was first developed for GT Legends (late 2005 release), the second game SimBin made after GTR1 (Q2 2005).

Aside from this, GTR2 has much improved graphics and effects, and simulates both the 2003 and 2004 FIA GT seasons, including all cars and tracks.

Console games tend to be an arcade crap, so go for rFactor if you want to experience better physics. :)

I do not know what rFactor is, but I assume it is a full motion cockpit simulator.

Dedicated sims are very cool. For one year and then they fall behind the curve of development.

The best strategy is to go with a PC based sim where you get the latest updates in hardware and software. Short of a development in F1 sims, PS3 is the next best thing.

I bought GTR for the PC and tried, but to me it is like GPL. Just way too hard to get anywhere and I lack the motivation to practise for hours to end up driving a 360 GT. To get good at F1 on the PC I had to practise hours on end as well, but there the "prize" is at least a F1.

Actually the games for the PS3 arent region specific anymore. So you could get the F1 game in Europe and play it in the states on your PS3 without any problems.

Wow! Somebody else besides me has GPL. This is exciting. To bad I'm not very good at it.

There is a handful of people on here who play it. Speedysam seems to be the star when it comes to GPL.

Glad to read your comment about PS3 no longer being region encoded. There is hope for Sony. I know they got a new prez, who seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Sony's biggest problem in the past was its software department lawyers telling the hardware folks what brakes and stops to put into their equipment. They made the best Mini DV camcorder, but I bought mine from JVC because Sony prohibits you from copying your own movies. How crazy is that!

I'm looking to buy a new game console....(my last one was the Nintendo 64 lol)

So the PS2 has no F1 games for us? (USA, Canada)
    What about the XBox/360?

Sorry if I sound like a noob, I just haven't kept up with the latest ramblings from any of the console manufacturers.

Only if you buy your PS2 in Europe or Asia will the F1 game work on it.

    XBox has no F1 games.

    Wait for PS3.

I'm not surprised. Sony had Ferraris in its F1 games all along. Would be silly not to.

It will be interesting to see how strong they make Schumacher in comparison to Alonso or the Ferrari to the Renault in their next game: In the current game (which bases its strengths on the previous season) it is a lot easier to win as Schumacher in the Ferrari than as Alonso in the Renault. Not exactly how the previous season played out in reality. :)

Did you use a wheel and pedals? It's almost impossible otherwise. The key IMO is a good setup, otherwise the cars simply don't do what you want them to. I downloaded most of them from the Internet (using the download online files (setups) feature in the game) and just used trial and error to see which was best.

Wy didn't you try the GT1 cars? Ferrari 550 GT, 575 GT, Lamborghini Mucielago GT, Saleen S7, Lister Storm, etc. GTR2 now has the Maserati MC12. They're 600hp+, 1100kg high DF cars.

I downloaded an F1 addon for GTR which was awesome. Same feeling as the cars in GTR, except... F1. I also downloaded a bunch of addon tracks (Road Atlanta, Road America, Leguna Seca, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, Nurburgring Nordschliefe, Fiorano, LeMans).

The quickest time at Monza in F1 was a 1:19.525 by Monty in '04. In the Ferrari 550 GT from 2003/2004 in GTR, it's a 1:42.xxx. Top speed on the straight is ~365km/h vs 300km/h.

I know what you mean about F1, though. I was playing GP4 with a 2004 season addon before I saw the light and got GTR. Love the tracks (Suzuka, Monaco, Silverstone, etc etc) but the cars feel silly now. Also the graphics are very dated and there is no FFB. At least the tracks were GPS modelled, so they were very accurate (to the 2001 layouts), although unlike GTR they didn't include all the bumps on the tracks. What are the PlayStation tracks like?

Pls don't insult me with the pedals and wheels question. :) I'm the nut who has built the front half of a car at home for his simulator. I would NEVER EVER play a racing game with a joystick or a console controller. <stepping down now from me soap box, had to get that off my chest>

I didn't download any setups. Obviously I should have. F1 games also improved massively by downloading the perfect setup per track and car.

Because I'm moving my sim is currently dismantled, but I'll be adding a PC back to it and will give GTR another try. Probably GTR2 by then. Another thing that bored me were the tracks. Few really interesting ones. What was great in GTR however was the sound.

Yes I tried the Maranello. Was even worse with it, but again, lack of practise and downloads I guess.

There is also now another PC sim out that has classic cars. I believe there is one Ferrari in it. Forgot the name. It is very much like GTR.

The tracks on the PS2 F1 game are super accurate. The graphics are superb and the tracks up to the latest detail of change. Grip changes and the physics model does count for things like camber. PS2 would be very cool if a) it had an appropriate dammage model and b) a better screen resolution...and c) would support multiple monitors for peripheral vision, but I guess that'll always remain a dream. <sigh>

GTR 2 is superb. The MC12 is awesome. They did remove the "ladder" requirement to unlock the higher levels that was such a pain in GT Legends (the classics game), I won't use cheats. Unfortunately, the only Ferrari in GTL is a nice 275 GTB 6/C (handles like a steel bodied car though <grin>)

The physics engine in GTR is the gMotor 1.0, GTL and GTR 2 are the gMotor 2.0, much better than the ISI engine that powered F1C '99-'02, GP4 and the Sierra stuff. gMotor 2.0 also powers rFactor. The PCC Mod for rFactor is terrific and the Barber add-on track is superb.

This field is changing fast. I enjoy and use the PS2 to demonstrate driving technique but Forza on the XBox is very good for practicing and demonstrating Road America and Road Atlanta. That said, Project Gotham 3 is why I bought an XBox 360. The Ferraris are awesome (I know, I own every one of them!)

Not going to get a PS3 until GT4 HD comes out. Glad to hear the Sony SCEE creations will be playable on North American machines. Saw that F1 '06 is due for PS3 next year in the US.

Interestingly though the Saleen S7 and Ferrari 550 GT will still produce quicker times. The MC12 has a big weight disadvantage (12xxkg vs 1100kg).

The cars in GTR2 feel much more stable at lower speed and over kerbs and are easier to recover from oversteer, but overall they're still very difficult to produce fast lap times with, just like in GTR1.

I played PGR1 and 2 on the X-Box, which I liked for the atmosphere and environments. I loved Manhattan in the first game and the Nurburgring in the second.

I don't have an XBox 360 so I haven't played PGR3 - and I'm not gonna get it just to play one game. :)

Actually, as I will be doing, you can buy a PS3, get the Japonese version of the F1 game off of eBay, and still be able to play on an American PS3. Many people have been insisting that the PS3 is not region-locked, so I should be playing that F1 game by the end of the month!

    LOL! :D

The default setups are terrible. GTR2 doesn't even have any default setups.

Best sound I've heard in a racing game to date. Little things like the dirtying windshield and marble buildup off the racing line over time (which you can feel through the FFB when you drive over it) and glowing brakes make the games special. GTR2 now also has much improved graphics, and you have to manage the revs better as overreving will kill the car, which was not simulated in GTR1 (although the engine could overheat and blow up). You also have to manage brake and tyre temps, as I'm sure you already know. ;)

It's arguably the fastest car but also one of the hardest to drive, and setup sensitive. Personally my favourite. ;)

    GT Legends?

    Why not?

Seriously. I consider hardware costs negligable costs. All that matters is the software. I have long adopted my own policy of trying to find the software that does what I need. Then I buy the hardware required to run it.

And yes, PGR3 is the only game I bought for my XBox360.

PS: Think about it this way: Allegedly Microsoft looses $ 100 per XBox360 because the hardware is underpriced. They can do that because they'll get you on the overpriced games. Kinda like Kodak's camera strategy for the Instamatic or Polaroid's for their cameras. Well, too bad, Bill Gates, you're loosing money with me. :)

PPS: The ring on the XBox360 is mind boggling. It was good on the XBox, great on PS2, but friggin unreal on XBox 360.

Agreed, but Forza 2 is coming...

There is a new physics tweak available for GTR 2 that makes it more "realistic" (harder). I'm still learning the 575 and the GT-R (fantastic sound) so I think I'll wait on that...
