I'm kind of late to the group, but I have an early 1970's Gibson Johnny Smith (cherry wood) that my old man gave to me along with a late 1960's Fender amp.

Ok, to the point...do I need to buy an acoustic guitar first to learn before I can master a blues guitar?

No you don't need an acoustic to learn, a Johnny Smith is an amazing guitar to learn on.

Very cool indeed. Is that a late 80's RG550 by chance?

Thanks! The Slash Jubilee is my dream amp right now. I think I'll get a 2555Silver Jubilee next.

For the LP Custom with the rose. It's a tribute to a fallen family member who passed away the same day I purchased the guitar. The top was scuffed sanded of its clear and the rose was handpainted, then the top was cleared over. You can't even feel the rose it sits beneath the upmost layers of clear. As for the EMGs, those are getting swapped out soon for some Seymour Duncan double open white bobbins.

    Carreaper,
You're as bad as I am. I could spend so much money on guitars. After playing for 17 years it's easy to come up with a collection. I've really held back.

Kramer Stryker (first guitar It's seen many days in the Middle East)
    Fender Fat Strat
    12Str Fender Acoustic Electric
    Washburn Acoustic Electric Classical
    Ibanez 4 string Bass
POS Fake Ibanez I can't remember the name right now.

Hoping to add a Les Paul, but I missed the boat without having to pay an arm and a leg for one.

RG550, that is right. In fact, RG550 is my favorite guitar. The 'strat' of the 80s! Here are some more RG550s and related Ibanez guitars. (all Japanese, nonthing made in Korea)

    These guitars are as follows:

New (just before production stopped) RG550 in classic BLACK on BLACK.

80's RG550 with worn maple fingerboard in BLUE. My favorite guitar to play. Has aftermarket Dimarzios (Evolution and PAF-pro) like the Jem. Originally had a blue mirror pickguard, changed to black to 'fit in' on stage. Someday when I no longer play this guitar I will put back the original 80's mirror pickguard

80's RG570 in GREEN. Awesome sound with the stock pickups. Something about the body makes it sound better than some of the RG550s (not routed out in front?)

90's Jem 7WH in WHITE (Signed by Steve Vai at a Guitar Center promo in '99) I don't really collect "signed" guitars but this one was the same price as the unsigned one, so I thought I would try something different and see if it has any additional value with time.

80's RG470 in RED. This is an unnusual Ibanez, with solid bridge and a 24.125 inch "Gibson" scale length. (All the other Ibanez I own have 25.5 inch "Fender" scale length)

90's JS1000 in metallic BLACK. Shure the chrome one would be great...I'm still looking for one. Very comfortable guitar. Played this one in a fusion band for some time.

I don't know if you can tell, but I just play them until a string breaks then move on to another guitar. When I am all out of guitars I re-string them as needed. As you may know re-stringing the 'floating' bridge guitars can take some time.

Great stuff! My guitarist in high school had one. It was a bright bright orange, almost reddish. The unique thing about that particular RG550 was the headstock was the same as the body color, instead of the standard black.

I do understand about the floating bridges, but the 550 was always much easier for me than the strat/strat like guitars with floating bridges. I personally spring those trems up and lock them down so they don't move. One day, I'll have the patience for it or I'll have a guitar with a fixed bridge.

If you are ever looking to part with one of those 550's, drop me a line. I've been itching for one for some time, and occasionally looking on ebay for em. I only have one Ibanez currently, but have had others in the past. It's a headstock heavy Roadstar II, which was perl, but yellowed out over the years. I had it defretted and filled professionally. Love the sound, but it isn't useful for me at all these days.

btw, that 470 looks like a Sabre. Wasn't that also the 570 series? What was the difference?

The 470 is pretty unique, here is an ad from, I think, the only year it was available. The body is similar or identical to the "S" series guitars. Notice how the ad does not mention the shorter scale (which is what really makes this guitar unique among Ibanez solidbodies).

CAUTION: the 470 name has been re-used for a modern "made in Korea" Ibanez with the cheap stamped steel tremolo bridge. The Original 470STR is a high-quality 'made in Japan' guitar.

This original image does not look too bad. The chrome pickguard fits the 80's image (though this is an ad from 1993). Maybe I need to track down my chrome pickguard for the 550.

Did you mention Korina? Here is the 80s Korina V re-issue. Notice the wood grain. The originals had the grain of the two-piece body angled in so it matched the "v" of the string guide.

I was always impressed with how neat and clean the control cavity is on this guitar. Nice flat black (electric shielding) paint with neat wiring and factory shielding on the control panel cover. Looks like this one is due for a new e-string also.

Thats bad ass, bro. Every once in a while i try to track down the V to match my Explorer. Those are the two big dollar "Vintage" Ibanez guitars.

I had a Road Flare Red RG 550 earlier in the year. That color burns your eyes and brain. Was mint condition.

You wanna see a REAL cool Ibanez:

That 'V' is actually a Gibson re-issue. A pair of Korina Ibanez, though, is on the list of things to get some day.

That Vai Jem on e-bay is great. When I was in the market for a Jem I could not really find any of the earlier models, so settled for a brand new one. I hope you get that price, I think these guitars are worth that much. I also think that, unlike pre-CBS Fenders and 50's Les Pauls, some good 'closet classics' can be found in the Ibanez range. I have at least one RG in the collection that was priced as if it were the Korean counterpart by a guitar shop that did not know what they had.

Well, speaking of Gibsons, here are a few:

1990s Cherry SG 1962 Reissue, Nickel Hardware, also has the PAF stickers on the back of the Nickel plated pickups. When I first got this the neck was like a Hygrometer. It was very sensitive to changes in humidity. Seems like I had to adjust the truss rod each time I played it. I live in a place with less humidity swings and it seems to be more stable.

1990s Les Paul Studio Light with MIII electronics. This guitar has some balsa wood in the body to make it light. Also, the MIII electronics fit in with the collection because I also have an original MIII (see prior post with the M3 BMW auto). If I remember correctly the black hardware on this came from Germany.

1990's Cherry Howard Roberts Fusion III. I really wanted a ES335 but a Gibson dealer had this for only $800 (absolutly not Guitar Center!). It was basically new and he got it back in a trade and gave me the 'as new' lifetime factory warranty. I am really more of a user than collector, and I filled out the warranty cards and gigged with this guitar. You can see how I have destroyed the collector value by wearing off the gold on the edge of the bridge pickup (none of the 'never been played' crap in this collection).

The other Gibsons were already posted: 1972 Black Les Paul, 1990s Cherry ES135, 1980s Korina Flying V, and 1990s Black MIII. I also have a "Ferrari Red" Gibson SG Special somewhere but cannot find it right now to show a picture of it.

:) ( sheepish grin) i have had 26 gibson les pauls...... :) not sure how many jap axes and strats i have had. i gave up counting them.

i would like to sell my 2 Schecters and my 61 reissue Strat. i want to get one of those 58 or 59 les paul standard reissues with a nice flame top.

with xmas around the corner, i figured someone may want a guitar or three! :)

i have been watching ebay of the LP reissues, i am hoping to find a used one as i will be playing the crap out of it, not looking at it. i think there are some members here who deal in guitars???

glad to see the thread is still going. i have been really busy and have not been online much.

    best.

What an AWESOME collection!! Love the ESP's. Have a KH2 myself. I have a KH3 coming next week. ;) I am also going to buy the KH2 Ouija guitar next after my KH3. Love Metallica and my ESP's. I will post some pics of my setup when I get the KH3. Had to get one in, its been on back order. That Gene Simmons' Bass would be cool to have. How did you come across that? Can you post a pic of it?? Id love to see it. :)

Damn bro, I have my KH-3 on Ebay right now. Im giving it away. 5th one Ive had. First $1500 takes it! Anyone interested? MSRP is $3299.00

As far as the Ouija, you have to be real careful these days. A lot of fakes. There is one on ebay RIGHT NOW as I type this. Its a fake. Dont buy it (if you planned on it)

The picture above of the '62 Re Issue SG--I had a '61 Re-Issue (Small pickguard) i just got rid of about 4 months ago. I had a MINT, BRAND NEW condition 1973 SG Standard earlier in the year from the original owner.

I came across a 1973 Black Fender P-Bass over the summer that was cleaner then a brand new guitar hanging at your local shop. Original case, instruction manual and a dried up original Fender Sticker/Label.

Oh yeah, Gene Bass. About a month or so ago A&E ran a Family Jewels Charity auction and it was for Gene's personal bass. I was the winner. Got a personal phone call from Gene and we spoke for a while. Ha.. Gene Is Gene! He's awesome. Very memorable conversation. Some day ill take pictures. Im going to put it for sale before Christmas. Dont know how much, but it will be substantial.

That Red ES is cool, with the strings.

I came across an ES-175T a few months ago. Turns out, those things are rarer then Purple Donkeys. People were banging down my door for it. Also came across a gorgeous Red ES-335 Studio which they made for only 4 years. That was a cool piece.

Anyone have the line on an ES GOTHIC??! Its the only Gothic Ive never owned and I cant track one down worth a damn.

I actually PM'd you a question and told you that was a nice axe and I was getting one soon too. Remember........ ;)
I like your KH3 add. I read alot of peoples questions and your replies. You have had a few of them alright. :) I was thinking about it at 1st, but for $1000K more I got a brand new one.

Ive been looking at the Ouija's for a while now. I could have got one with Certificate Of Auth for a really good price last year. A real one. I forget the serial number of it. I should have, as I can get a KH3 anytime. I will get one of them, then buy another KH2 and get my friend to airbrush it like Kirk's 'Mummy' guitar. The Boris Karloff pic. I love that axe. My friend said he could do it, as long as I give him a nice pic of it for him to free hand it on the guitar. :) Then.............I want to get some of the JH Explorers. There was a Kevin Lawrence Explorer in ebay 2 days ago. Was US$5K. Ive seen JH1 and JH2 for sale over the years. Every now and then they pop up. I will also get the JH Grynch. One on ebay now for US$1800. :)
