Thanks to all to gave me advice on my tach problem. I decided to buy a new tach and then have my old one repaired as a back-up. Just finished installing the new tach.

All seems to be good, however the idle is high. After driving the car for 15 minutes the idle is about 1700 RPM. I know the manual indicated 1000 PRM for warrm idle.

    Questions:

While the car may not be fully warm (espically since the outside temp is 42 F), what should I expect for the cold idle?

Is there a simple way to verify the new tach is correct?

    Should I adjust the idle?

I don't want to ask a really, really stupid question, but: have you made sure that the floor mat isn't pressed up against the accelerator? This is so easy to have happen in the 328, and even the guy pulling my car into the paint booth had it happen a couple weeks ago. ("Wow this is idling high!?!?")

i think cold idle is about 1000-1100 rpm. my 328 tach doesn't work either. it never goes over 2K rpm.

are you sure it's 1700rpm and not a misread by the tach? listen to the engine. if it sounds pretty loud then it probably is 1700 for real. if so, that is way too high.

    Hi Gerry,

I have an inductive tachometer (for sparkplug wire) you are welcome to borrow to confirm actual engine RPMs. I'm in MN, not too far from you.

    Best,

    Carl,

Thanks for the offer. I think I have located one in town, but if that falls through I'll contact you.

I tested my tach with a Fluke multimeter. While the warn idel is reading 1700 on the tach, the Fluke reads 1000. At 4000 on the tach, the Fluke reads 3500. I have contacted Ferrari to see what they want to do to get me a tach that is calibrated.

I use the Snap-On timing light with the digital tach read out or you can use any timing light with a built in tach meter.

My 86 idled high- I adjusted the bronze dial by hand near the air intake and it slowed the idle down correctly. Someone must have pics and know what I am talking about.

The idle on the car appears correct, the new tach is reading too high.

The Fluke multi-meter is an automotive testing tool. While it measures RPMs like the Snap-On timing light (inductive), it has more functionality to measure and test electrical circuits and temperatures.

I might as well test tach sending unit. Can someone point me to where the sending unit is located? A picture would be great.

    Thanks, Gerry

Received a replacement tach from the folks at Ferrari UK over the holiday. This is the second unit from them, and two is a charm! The tach is reading correct and all seems good. Went out for a nice long drive with the top down. Cannot beat 60 and sunny on November 26 in Chicago!
