How can we retain more posters? Are there any incentives that could be put in place - ie rankings/ access to a tiered forum, etc? What puts posters off / what encourages posters? How can we encourage lurkers to post?

You know Rob, I really do not believe there is much you can do.

I am sure it is down the individuals whether they post or not.
I think posting on forums is not too different from speaking publicly e.g. Wedding. Not everyone is comfortable with that. They can or they can't!

agreed. Its hard for the not shy folk to understand, but some people will not want to post for this very reason. Me, I can talk cobblers for England....probably why I have been a best man three times...:D:D:D

    What if....

a person didnt post - say twice a month. There account would be deleted? Would this encourage people to post? I have seen a similar thing elsewhere and it seems to work.

thats one of those suck it and see ones innit, plus you have an issue if someone has paid a subscription just to view....they aint gonna be happy if their viewing gets pulled. My advice would be to try it.

It's not a question of maturity, what you proposed encourages posting for posting's sake! Surely you want to encourage contributions!

Its not a proposal. I will only make proposals from points raised from everyone. It is merely a suggestion.

Out of all the registered members that don't post how do you know who is from the UK or is the suggestion to delete users accounts that don't hit their post quota going to across the whole of fchat????

Dont know exactly what is possible Steve, is the honest answer. Its just one idea that i thought could work, certainly an administrative nightmare!

    What else could be done?

Lurkers are a problem on every forum I am on and every forum admin scratches their head and tries to find a solution. The fact is that is just the way it is and I wouldn't waste time on it. If the content is good then good posters will post. Enlisting a few trusted posters to open new topics when things are quiet is worthwhile and ensuring topics stay on topic also works wonders :)
