interesting..very interesting.....This is absolutely preposterous. Those hundreds of people who take pictures and post them online for someone else's commercial gain (in this case F-chat) need permits?? That seems just crazy.. but then again.. the laws never seemed logical to begin with. Hail the nitwits in the legislature.

also..Five; thanks for the link..I guess it's true: "There is no knowledge that is not power!"

    Intersting link.

I am interested in this more then anything from that link:
    Is the car the prop?

FWIW, I don't agree with tacts used in your instance by said LE officer, but it is an interesting tid bit of information that we are all learning it seems.

I agree. The whole situation is preposterous. Doesn't the officer have better things to do other than stop somebody from taking pictures of ones own car? Sounds like a poor use tax payer's dollars and a poor excuse for being a pompous a$$. You should've taken a picture of him.

Hell, if that was a legitimate law, our buddy Kirby would've passed 3 strikes. :p

I read through some stuff and it basically comes down to whether it was for commercial use and if not (as stated above) whether a car could constitute a prop.

    Here's a couple links:

    http://www.blm.gov/nhp/what/commercial/filming/index.html

(have to dig down in this one)

    http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/permits/documents/251_50_final.pdf

and a good, quick primer on photography legal rights:

    http://www.kantor.com/useful/Legal-Rights-of-Photographers.pdf

He could have given you a parking ticket if he really wanted to cite you for something. Since he didn't do anything I figure he might just be a Lambo owner breaking your balls for having a Ferrari :)

I have some friends who are cops (although not in CA) and haven't had any bad experiences with any with my car in my area.. in fact just the opposite. So, who knows.

Perhaps I should grow a beard and wear a turban next time. Think they'll be a little more sympathetic then? LOL...

While I share in your anger at this ridiculous situation (the cop is clearly an idiot with self-esteem issues, and, being a photographer and having some understanding of what is allowed and what is not, I would've demanded to see the law pertaining to such a situation, and failing thus, demanded the cop's badge number.), I'm a little perturbed by your use of the term "***gotry".

Unless you know for certain that the cop was a homosexual on drugs, the term High ***gotry is a little un-PC, and I feel it is our duty, as people who can afford more than most, to refrain from such characterizations lest it give exotic car owners a bad name. I'm sure it has been your experience as well as mine, but people who cannot afford these cars often look up to the people who can, and I feel we should set an example not only financially, but morally as well.

While we may banter here among ourselves, please consider that these forums are public and there are people reading these messages who may be young and impressionable. It'd be irresponsible to leave lurkers, whatever their age, with a bad impression of Ferrari owners.

From your intro, "Pardon the obscene thread title...", I assume you were a little hesitant about posting such a phrase. Next time, maybe "Bad cop" or "A$$whole cop" would've sufficed.

No offense intended, just trying to move things to a bigger and better future.

The cop is a moron. Unless you were out there with lighting equipment and professional models he should've known that this was just a normal person taking photos. I think the Ferrari gave him a brain fart.

I've been asked by cops and park rangers on my photoshoots. They're usually cool about it after you explain things to them. I offer to let them stay and watch the models. :-D They tend to be nice after that.

SR -> 880 South -> 85 N -> Saratoga Ave make a left -> continue straight, through downtown saratoga, and you will start going up the hill. Cross over the crest (35 and 9 intersection) and start going down the otherside. About 5min later you will see the Vista point on your left

    Yo Kirb & John,
I am using the Nikon D200 with the 10.5mm Fisheye (f2.8D) Nikkor Lens. however, there is a 'newer' version of this lens which is 16mm but the guys at KPS (Keeble & Schuchat in Palo Alto) said that the 10.5mm is the one to use with the D200. Can anyone tell me if that is correct?? I mean, they're the pros so I didn't question them. Regardless, the pictures came out beautifully. The distortion effect of the fisheye is fabulous IMO. I can show you some more pics that I took. Normally, I use the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G VR Lens. That thing is a beast and you can even get the fisheye (almost) effect with it.

We should all get together for dinner or something and talk photography. Someday I hope to film/shoot (pictures!) the beasts of the Serengeti!! LOL..
