I got to see the event last night. It was great!

A few of the notable fights:

    Brandon Vera Vs. Frank Mir
Didn't know what to expect from Mir. Vera came out and completely dominated the fight. It was over in the blink of an eye. Vera was very impressive.

    Tim Sylvia Vs. Jeff Monson
The first half of the fight seemed to have Sylvia getting past himself being able to hold off Monson taking him to the ground. Monson made a lot of strong efforts to bring him down, and actually got him down a few times. The big surprise was that Sylvia did a fantastic job on the ground. The fight overall lacked excitement. In the last round, the ref could barely get them to fight each other. Sylvia was ahead on points, and didn't want to get into Monson's take down range, while Monson was simply exhausted. It was almost comical when they were on the ground - Sylvia was on his back in a full guard, Monson stood up while in full guard, and he could barely reach Sylvia's face, while Sylvia was able to unload some elbows from the same distance. Definitely a David vs. Goliath situation, although Goliath prevailed.

Matt Hughes Vs. Georges St. Pierre
Even though GSP is from my home town, I have to say I have not seen many of his fights. I have seen Hughes fight quite a bit, and like everyone, thought he was unbeatable. Boy, was I wrong! GSP was coming from everywhere - incredible kicks, incredible punches, stong, clean, and connecting. Hughes never really looked like he was in it. Total domination by GSP. I am very impressed with GSP - can't wait for a rematch!

    Dan,

I was too late to order the fight last night so I was not aware of the results until I read your post.

Too bad for Matt Hughes, I thought it would be a better fight.

GSP was all over MH. Hughes didn't seem to know what do in the standup. Great fight.

About time somebody beat Hughes. i am NOT a big fan of his at all. I really didn't think GSP would beat him. Hughes totally dominated him in the first meeting. GSP is good for the sport! hopefully he'll defend for a long time. I guess I just don't like the whole Militich team. Cause I think Silvia has just hight to his advantage. He is real boring and skill level is nothing like the guys from Pride Fighting. (Japan). IMO

I was a big MH fan, until he started running his mouth the last few weeks. I didn't think GSP had much of a chance. Sounds like MH was surprised too! Silvia is boring. UFC better give Silvia the word that people are paying to see a fight, not some giant walk around the ring.

I was definitely disappointed with the two title fights! Sylvia damn near got choked out but managed to escaped. You all have to admit, at the end Monson's face was WRECKED!

I'm a big Hughes fan, so I was upset to see him get handed his ass handed to him. He seemed to blah, whereas GSP was bouncing off the walls. I think it came down to Hughes treating this like any other fight and GSP treating it like the fight of his life.

The Sylvia-Munson fight was lame..........GSP absolutely dominated Hughes, I was a bit surprised at how easily GSP handled him.
Hughes shouldn't have ever tried to stand-up and throw hands with GSP......bad idea for a wrestler/ ground and pound guy.

Georges ST. Pierre is a promoters dream fighter. He is the complete package. He is the best pound per pound complete fighter that has ever competed in the U.F.C. I had no doubt in my mind that Georges St. Pierre was going to completely destroy Matt Hughes, which he did. As far as a rematch, I am not sure if Matt Hughes wants any more of that type of beating.
GSP is a great athlete with great skills, foot work, hands, kicks, grappling defense plus grappling skills. GSP could be the Ali, Roger Federer or Tiger Woods of Mixed Martial Arts. Hopefully, UFC will pay him some big bucks for his next fight. If I was GSP's agent, I would try to make a deal with Pride for GSP to fight their top fighter in his weight division for BIG BIG BUCKS like boxing champions get paid.
Speaking of Pride, in my opinion, they have the best fighters overall and they are more diverse.

i think bbj has a crush on GSP. Hughs looked out if it, its like he was just going through the motions and wondering if he should stand up and fight or rip gsp's arms off on the ground.

oh and bbj, Ali was the greatest. GSP is not even close.

Funny thing is in a street fight with Ali at his prime and GSP fighting as he is now, GSP would tear through Ali with ease. Boxers are one dimensional and really don't stand a chance against a competent Mixed Martial Artist. Thats a fact.

Speaking of Mir and Sylvia...anyone see the time Mir broke Sylvia's arm with an arm bar? Crazy stuff - the camera was right on Tim's forearm when it just 'popped' 1/2 way between the wrist and elbow. I squirm just thinking about it.

I started liking Matt Hughes after his fight with Frank Trigg. In it, he gets kicked in the balls, but the ref doesn't call a time out. When Hughes goes down holding his crotch, Trigg is on him like white on rice. For the next couple minutes he ground and pounds Hughes, gets his back and puts him in a rear naked choke that turns his face purple. Then, somehow, Hughes reverses. He picks up Trigg in the air, carries him across the Octagon and slams him down on the other side. Returns the favor of the ground and pound, then chokes him out. Absolutely incredible fight.

On par for entertainment with the Kimo vs. Bob Sapp in K-1.

Was hoping to see something more from Hughes along those lines last Saturday. Have to agree that that GSP's got all the tools and looked like he deserved to be wearing that title belt.

GSP looked amazing, was not expecting such a DOMINATING performance, made Matt Hughes look scared.
The kicks to the crotch weren't intentional, and as soon as Big Jon told him to watch it, he listened.
Can't wait to see him kick the mouth out of Serra!

Actually in the post fight interview Hughes said GSP didn't hit him in the sack, that they were leg kicks and he was in pain. Link...

i agree, but on a level of domintaion of a single sport, ali takes the cake. Ali was fast as all hell and could move too, but if GSP got him on he ground it would be over.
