    Let me think, PE is Phase Encoded. But GCR?? Sounds like IBM bollocks, have to google that. PE tapes were higher density than standard.

    One for you, what's a CRAM drive? (clue: 1975)

    GCR = group coded recording (6250 bpi)
    PE= phase encoded (1600 bpi)
    NRZI = non-return zero inverted (800 bpi)

    CRAM I have never heard of but I started in IT in 82 so before my time but I would say it's some kind of coded removable access media ??

    I only go back as far as paper-tape and punch-card readers and doing cats-eye alignments on floppy drives. Became the local expert on Telex and Kennedy tape drives under duress (nobody else would do it :( ) and still miss the old suck and blow tape drives as there was an art to getting them to work correctly.

    Oh I did work on some old Concurrent machines when I got back from the UK in '90 which had core memory (invented by Dr Wang , my first IT company) and all the instructions had to be loaded in hex to get it booted !!

    You're younger than you look JM!

    CRAM = Card Random Access Memory. POS idea from NCR halfway between tape and fixed disk.

    Better to be Geeks than hairdressers, eh?

    oh yeah, I've seen them, my brother worked for NCR for about a hundred years and had heaps of those things at his house.....was always fixing them for Franklins

    I wish I was a geek, all this is over my head :confused:

    I once spent 3 days in the Katoomba fixing a 9 pin matrix printer because I pulled the platen off :rolleyes:

    I also use to be the only engineer to pull the casting off the 300M removable CDC drives in the field (was suppose to be a return to factory jobbie) , replace all heads and align perfectly with an oscilliscope .... only to have the operator put the same platter back in that crashed the drive in the first place !!!

    Spent the w/e with her at NatMut getting double time for playing hide the sausage with her :D after she crashed it a second time

    Nothing geeky about playing hide the sausage, you should know that Pap.:)

    Went and bought a new modem/router combo to suit ADSL 2 and whilst there decided to get a new printer/copier/scanner/fax combo too. Have spent about 10hrs trying to sort out probs with it all. First I talk to JM"s mafia people (read HP tech assistance) who happen to be in Malasia and have difficult accents to understand, then I talk to the Belkin people who I can understand but they are full of crap, then Norton anti virus is causing probs so I talk to them in India, again with accents that are difficult to understand. One party tells you one thing and the other just contradicts it. The guy in the store is even less help (I should have known by the way his arms were dragging on the floor).

    I think I'll go back to using carrier pigeons!!

    it's no better for me Steve, I spent 3 hrs talking to India trying to get the recovery CD from them, they kept insisting it was the player or some other hardware problem !!

    It's very frustrating all this India bollocks to save a few bucks ... was told the other day they can employ 4 Indians for one of my salaries, yeah right, but the intellect level will still be below what is needed (it is low already :D )

    I can't wait until the Phillipines become the call centre of the world, at least they are very polite and their English is easier to understand.

    Oh and when you get put thru to the Malaysian "helpdesk" you might as well hang up, they are .........
